It’s been a few months since Apple released iPhone 13 lineup. And while many users have found these handsets a value for money, some have also reported various kinds of bugs and issues with them.

Apple has made several upgrades to its 2021 iPhone lineup. Some major and most appreciated upgrades include a reduced notch and 120Hz ProMotion displays. However, high refresh rates are limited to just the Pro models.

iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max lagging PDF in Safari

Having said that, it seems that Apple’s 120 Hz or so-called ‘ProMotion’ display feature is not fully optimized with native applications, according to some incoming reports.

Many iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max users are now complaining of lagging and freezing issues while scrolling through PDF files in Safari.

Here are some reports for reference:

HI, I recently upgraded to the Iphone 13 Promax. While browing PDF files in safari, scrolling of PDF lag and freezes before resuming. I have no such issues with Iphone 11 pro max with the same OS. Safari address bar also sometimes goes missing and i have to close and reopen safari for the address bar to reappear. (Source)

I have had this issue with my 13 Pro Max since launch. I’m surprised this isn’t a more known issue? It is perfectly reproducible on the 13PM and perfectly NOT a problem on any device with a 60Hz display (or the iPad Pro). It’s not just the PDF pages themselves but the entire screen has animation lag (only when viewing a PDF in Safari) (Source)

Users say that when they scroll through PDF files in Safari browser, the frame rate drops to around 30 FPS making the scroll laggy. And this happens only with PDFs, while other things in Safari work as intended.

Try these workarounds

It is likely that this glitch is caused by the adaptive refresh rate feature. As soon as users turn it off, the issue goes away. It seems that Apple’s adaptive refresh rate places priority for PDFs too low.

Moreover, some users have also fixed the issue by trying other workaround and those affected can give them a shot and see if any of them resolves the issue.

I confirm that. Just did a screen recording now on my iPhone 13 Pro and the issue is instantly gone! So this is something wrong with the adaptive refresh rate. If you put the phone in save charge mode, it also solves the issue. (Source)

Unfortunately, Apple has not yet acknowledged this issue and when they do we will update the space down below with the latest information, till then stay tuned.
