[Updated] Telegram aware iOS users getting flooded with 'You have a new message' ghost notifications after latest update

Telegram is one of the most popular messaging services available right now. The privacy-centric messaging platform has more than 500 million users and is on the list of the top 10 most downloaded apps on the Google Play Store.

Some of the main features include the ability to use the app parallelly on multiple devices and send files with any size restrictions. The app gained massive popularity after WhatsApp changed it privacy policy earlier this year.

As is the case with any software, Telegram users do encounter some glitches while using the app like the broken notification badges on iOS devices.

With that being said, Telegram iOS users say that the ghost notifications issue that was reportedly fixed last year has resurfaced. The issue causes the affected users’ iOS devices to get flooded with Telegram notifications saying ‘You have a new message.’

Users say that they are sometimes getting hundreds of notifications when their devices are idle. Some say they tried disabling notifications using in-app settings but the option makes no difference.

I’m not sure is this bug related to latest IOS update or newest telegram update but it would appear that people with older IOS versions still have this bug with latest telegram update as well. For me example when I have telegram desktop open on PC I constantly get “new message” notification to my iphone even tho I don’t have new messages. I decided to make this report again even tho there’s older report but it appears admin doesn’t want to open it up so I figured this is better way?

When I read any message on my laptop (MacBook Air M1 with Telegram (not Lite) from App Store, it may be relevant), a notification “You have a new message” appears on my iPhone (also using default telegram from App Store, message previews are disabled), even if the message is from a muted chat.

With users receiving hundreds of blank notifications, the Telegram bug is making users really angry and frustrated. It is interesting to note that the issue popped up during the same time last year.

Thankfully, Telegram has acknowledged the bug and said that the developers are currently looking into ghost notifications. Unfortunately, they did not share any ETA on when the issue will be fixed.
