New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on October 28, 2021) follows:

Over the past few weeks, some Chromebook users have been reporting annoying issues related to add their Google account on the device.

Affected Chromebook users mainly report two issues: ‘Add another account’ stuck on loading and a ‘Sign in to add a Google Account’ message that appears even when they have already logged.

‘Add another account’ stuck on loading issue

This issue (1, 2, 3) does not allow users to add a new Google account to their Chromebook. According to reports, if you choose the option to add another account, the loading screen gets stuck.

Whenever I try to add another google account on my new chromebook, it tries to load but it never refreshes or even gets past the “loading” screen. I’ve tried signing out and signing back in, restarting, and I’ve reset everything. None of the solutions have helped so far.

This situation creates some annoying problems. For example, if you can’t sign in to another Google account, you can’t access another email account that you use.

According to reports, these problems began to emerge in September. Unfortunately, there is no workaround that can help users affected by this bug.

‘Sign in to add a Google Account’ message

The other bug that some Chromebook users are experiencing (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) does not allow them to use their applications correctly.

According to the reports, even though users have already logged in with their Google account, the apps ask them to enter their credentials.

When I try to open Gmail or Photos on my chromebook, lately I am getting a message “Sign in to add a Google Account” even though my account profile image is displayed upper right. If I try to enter my details , it responds “This account already exists on your device.”

This means that affected devices could not use the synchronization feature of the affected apps, a fundamental element in Chromebook and Google services.

This error also began to appear in September, according to a user report. In this, more specific details are added, such as that the problems started after receiving the v93.0.4577.85 update.

Google is aware of both problems

Fortunately, the Google team is aware of both bugs and is investigating about them. This was confirmed by Google’s product experts in response to the reports (1, 2).

We just today learned that this may be related to an existing known bug that is being investigated.

At the moment, it only remains to wait for updates on the matter. This article will be updated with the related news that arise to keep you informed.

Update 01 (December 02)

IST 12:52 pm: While this issue continues to afflict users, there might be a workaround. According to reports, disabling all extensions seems to be helping resolve this bug.
