[Updated] Google Pixel 6 & 6 Pro overheating issue during normal use (web browsing, watching TikTok & Instagram videos) comes to light

The early adopters of Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones continue to find aspects in which they need to improve through updates.

The most recent reports describe an alleged overheating issue. This would occur even during fairly normal use of the device (web browsing, Instagram videos, etc.) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

According to reports, some Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro get very hot (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Although heating is normal for mobile devices, it tends to occur with extensive use.

However, the overheating on the Google Pixel 6 reportedly happens even during standard use. That is, watching videos, web browsing or using light apps (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

Hello! I just got my Pixel 6 and I feel it gets considerably hot during normal use… Doing regular things like browsing Reddit I feel that the back of the phone gets quite hot. Has anyone else noticed this?

This issue also produces others such as closing apps, thermal throttling, and even reboots.

Pixel 6 pro aggressive overheating

I have just been using my new Pixel 6 pro like normal. Very light browsing closed all my apps restarted it multiple times. Even just light texting causes the phone to heat up substantially. I’m not sure if anyone else has had this problem yet but it is very upsetting.I’m worried that I’m going to be damaging my device by using it.

If you suffer from this issue, there are some potential workarounds that you can try. One of them consists of deactivating the system’s battery optimization options:

The other workaround is a bit more aggressive, but it can help if the previous one didn’t work for you. One user reports that factory resetting the phone solved the bug.

Yes me too, i was worried i had a defective device with my Pixel 6 Pro getting warm under casual/normal usage after 15-20 minutes, or possibly the tensor chip itself just runs warm/hot.

Did a factory reset yesterday as i ran into a few bugs during the initial setup process after unboxing 3 days ago.

So far it has been running decently cool now so not sure if a background process or app was stuck syncing in the background, but all seems well now and its doesnt seem to be heating up as easily under normal use.

01:12 pm (IST): One of the affected users now say that this issue has been resolved by uninstalling the Wear OS app. So, if you have this application installed on your Pixel 6, then you can try uninstalling it and see if it helps.

04:25 pm (IST): Here’s another workaround that may help users resolve the overheating issue on Pixel 6 devices. So, if you are still having this problem then you can try it out.

Workaround:

I had the same issue till I cleared data and uninstall/reinstalled the app. One of the previous updates made my phone battery drain and Reddit app was the culprit. (Source)

01:37 pm (IST): Google has improved thermal performance with December 2022 update. So you can update your Pixel 6 and see if the overheating issue persists.

02:05 pm (IST): According to patch notes, the issue has been fixed in the latest July 2023 update for Google Pixels.
