Spotify, the music and podcast streaming service, offers a special mode designed to continue using it safely while the user is driving.

Spotify Car View can be activated on Android Auto compatible cars when the phone is connected. However, many users complain that Car View has disappeared from the app.

Spotify Car View mode missing, it no longer works

According to multiple reports, Spotify Car View mode is missing, not activating when connecting the phone with Android Auto (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

I noticed recently my phone stopped switching to cast mode when I am in my car. When I checked, the car mode setting had completely disappeared. Does any one know what’s going on here?

For context, I live in New Zealand, my phone is a Samsung A20. I got my current car just before Easter this year, and for a while my phone didn’t recognize the Bluetooth as a car so it didn’t enter car mode but I was able to make Spotify go into car mode permanently. At some point for some reason my phone started recognizing my car as a car, and that lasted maybe a month or 2 before car mode disappeared.

Instead, now the Spotify app only reportedly displays the following message: ‘Always pay full attention to the road and abide with all traffic regulations’.

There is a reason for it (and a workaround)

What appeared to be a bug turned out to be intentional. A moderator of the Spotify support forum confirmed that the Car View mode was removed. The company is working on something better.

Thanks for posting here.

We can confirm that we’re retiring the car view feature. This however doesn’t mean we don’t want to improve on how our users listen to Spotify while driving. On the contrary, we’re actively exploring a variety of new ways to deliver the best in-car listening experience. Think of retiring car-view as something that needs to happen in an effort to make way for new innovations coming down the track.

Please bear with us for the time being. While we work backstage on improving the experience, one alternative would be to listen hands-free via Google Assistant.

While the new alternative that Spotify works on arrives, they suggest a kind of workaround.

Basically, they recommend linking Spotify with Google Assistant and activating the hands-free mode with the command ‘Hey Google, play Spotify’.

The hands-free mode is compatible with the Google Maps app. Therefore, it should serve as a temporary solution to listen to music while driving, without touching the phone.

Update 1 (December 14)

03:33 pm (IST): Spotify moderator has provided an alternative or a temporary workaround for missing Car View mode on Spotify which is listening via Google Assistant.

To do this, link your account and just say ‘Hey Google, play Spotify’. This feature also works with Google Maps so users can easily navigate while listening to Spotify.
