macOS 12.1 beta 3 has been available for a few hours. Thanks to this, users are already finding bugs to correct before the rollout of the stable version.

One of the bugs found in macOS 12.1 beta 3 affects the custom ICC color profiles. Apparently the update ‘breaks’ them and the colors are distorted.

macOS 12.1 beta 3 update reportedly breaks custom ICC color profiles

In summary, ICC color profiles are useful for professionals who work with images. These allow the pictures to maintain their original colors among different devices (1, 2, 3, 4).

Considering how popular macOS is in the professional design area, maintaining color accuracy is especially important. So, a malfunction of the feature can worry many.

According to reports from some macOS 12.1 beta 3 users, the update breaks their own custom ICC color profiles.

After newest update, something happened to my custom color profile that caused the colors to look washed out and weird (totally blown out, like a “deep fried” meme). This happened many updates ago and was/is fixed when I set color profile back to default and re-calibrate. This isn’t the problem rn, but background info…

Now, after computer turns of screen (M1 MBA), screen flashes for fraction of second looking like above, returns to normal. But, the cursor and mouse pointer are solid black. Like the fill and outline is black. This remains until the computer is restarted.

The built-in color profiles reportedly work correctly

Apparently, the bug only affects custom ICC color profiles. In other words, the color profiles that come with the system reportedly work correctly.

Having the same issue with my M1 MacBook Pro in 12.1 Beta 3. The problem are custom ICC color profiles. Something is broken in there. Using a built-in color profile that comes with macOS, everything is fine. As soon as I load a custom color profile of my Spyder 5 Elite I am getting exactly the same picture as you. I already reported to Apple, make sure to do the same. My report ID is FB9763509 in case you want to point Apple to it.

In some cases, the bug produces noticeable distortions in the colors of the chosen custom profile. These are shown ‘washed out’ and with serious misalignments.

Image is completely distorted for some

Meanwhile, there are other reported cases where the entire screen image gets completely distorted when trying to set a custom ICC color profile on macOS 12.1 beta 3.

At the moment, Apple has not declared anything related to the matter. So, it only remains to wait to see if the solution arrives in a next beta update.
