New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on October 27, 2021) follows:
One of the most popular MOBA games competing with the likes of DOTA 2 and League of Legends is Smite. Developed by Titan Forge Games and published by Hi-Rez Studios and Tencent Games, the game came out in 2014.
It is a free-to-play third-person MOBA where players play as gods or goddesses and other mythological figures and fight against each other. It is similar to other MOBA and even has several tournaments with a successful esports scene.
Smite is based on the popular freemium model and has two in-game currencies in the form of gems and favor that can either get you skins, boosts amongst other items.
With more than 35 million players worldwide, players are matched against each other based on their skill level. It makes use of a modded TrueSkill ranking system.
If players are unable to find a match in the first 5 minutes after they start matching up, the algorithm lowers its requirements to find a match quickly.
However, many Smite players have complained that the matchmaking system is unfair and pitches inexperienced players against those who have thousands of matches.
Smite is good, but HiRez is garbage. Shit matchmaking, new players under hell with a lot of stupid Smurfs, we can’t even bring new Friends to play this Shit Game full of Smurfs destroying their XP on Smite.

My roommate and I are both above level 100. After losing a game with an 0-11 Ra on our team we checked his profile. Level 7. I get that SMITE’s matchmaking puts the lowest level player on the team with the highest level to balance the game but why is a level 7 player even an option?

Some say that the issue is because of the low player count while others say it is the developer’s fault. Some believe that the Smite matchmaking was always bad.
It is really frustrating for both new and veteran players since both are unable to enjoy the game. Veteran players say the new players have no idea what they are doing whereas new players complain that they are unable to learn the game since they are pitted against high-elo.
We know no MOBA is perfect and matchmaking balancing is an enormous task, but maybe it’s time Smite takes a second look at its algorithm and tweaks it so players are placed with someone their rank or level.
That brings us to the question, do you think Hi-Rez Studios should overhaul Smite matchmaking algorithm? Let us know what you think by voting in the poll below or sharing your experience in the comment section.

The poll results are out and interestingly, the votes are evenly split between those who feel the matchmaking system should be overhauled, those that don’t agree, and those that don’t play Smite.
