Here’s the crux of the article in video form:

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 14, 2021) follows:

If you like to play shooting games, you might be aware of Destiny 2. It is a multiplayer FPS video game developed by Bungie.

This video game is available to play on different gaming platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, and Stadia.

In order to keep the gameplay experience up to the mark, devs keep on sending regular software updates. As such, Destiny 2 players recently received a huge list of new features, improvements, and fixes with the 3.1.1 update.

However, it seems that this patch has become more of a hindrance for gamers rather than making enhancements to the game. As per reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), players are complaining of broken cross-play on Xbox when playing Destiny 2.

In particular, every player is suddenly appearing as blocked on Xbox console. Moreover, gamers are unable to join any fireteams or receive any invites which is making cross-play/invite unworkable.

Anyone that isn’t showing up as xbox is blocked. Can’t play with any of my friends on steam or playstation. What gives? I can’t find anything out there about this besides one thread on the bungie forums with a handful of other people having the same problem. (Source)

@BungieHelp Almost all of my friends in Destiny 2 are being shown as blocked following the most recent update. I cannot send or receive invites from them, and there are no players on the blocked list for my Bungie.net account. I am on the Xbox One X. (Source)

After looking at multiple reports, it is clear that this issue is caused by the recent 3.1.1 update.

Also, it seems that only Xbox players are affected by this bug as we haven’t come across any reports from gamers on other gaming platforms.

Meanwhile, it is good to see that Bungie support team has addressed this issue bothering Xbox players. Moreover, a workaround has been provided that affected players can try in order to overcome this situation.

Gamers can try the following steps to resolve the bug:

– Navigate to Settings > General
– Online Safety & Family
– Privacy & Online Safety
– Xbox Privacy
– View Details and Customize
– Communication and Multiplayer
– Set “You can join cross-network play” to “Allow”
– Set “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text” to “Everybody”

Additionally, players who want to take advantage of LFG features can change their “Other can communicate with voice, text, or invites” settings. (Source)

So, this doesn’t seem to be an issue if it can be permanently resolved by changing some settings. It is possible that the new patch has made some changes in settings on Xbox which can be set back to normal.

Meanwhile, if the above-mentioned workaround does not fix this broken crossplay issue then might be a bug that needs to resolve internally.

That said, we will keep you updated on the further development of this story as and when anything new comes to our notice, till then stay tuned.

Update 1 (October 16)

Bungie support confirmed that the change was made because the game was previously violating Microsoft’s policies for crossplay.

The reason is that is actually how Cross Play works. Before the update, it was broken and we were violating Microsoft’s policies, so we fixed it. Now, to use Cross Save, all communication has to be opened on that platform. (Source)

Update 2 (October 18)

In case you show up as blocked on your friend’s account, then there’s even a small chance that your account might be actually blocked on their profile. It’s unlikely, but it might be worth checking out.

You can get your friend to head here to check if your Bungie.Net name is listed. In case it is, then they’ll have to unblock your account.

Update 3 (October 19)

As it turns out, Bungie is actively investigating the issue and has shared a temporary workaround that you can try out via the console itself or through a browser.

Steps via web:

– Go to account.xbox.com/en-us/settings and login
– Click on your Profile
– Under “Privacy” set “You can communicate outside of Xbox Live with voice & text” to Everyone”
– Set “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” to “Everyone”
– Click “Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety” toward the top
– Set “You can play with people outside of Xbox Live” to “Allow”

Steps via console:

– Navigate to Settings > General
– Online Safety & Family
– Privacy & Online Safety
– Xbox Privacy
– View Details and Customize
– Communication and Multiplayer
– Set “You can join cross-network play” to “Allow”
– Set “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text” to “Everybody”
– Then clear your console cache.

Update 4 (October 21)

Bungie now reports that they’re undertaking server maintenance but players shouldn’t expect to see a fix for the crossplay issues just yet.
