[Updated] Spotify background playback issue (crashing) lives on after latest iOS 15 update, as per some user reports

Spotify is by far one of the most used audio streaming services not just on iOS. You can do a lot of stuff on Spotify such as create your own playlist, listen to favorite artists, and choose different genres.

The free plan already has a lot to offer, while the premium subscription adds more to your existing pack along with uninterrupted ad-free audio streaming.

Besides being ad-free, the premium plan also lets you download songs for offline listening and even listen in groups via the the group session function.

But lately, some iOS users have been facing an issue where Spotify keeps crashing while listening to songs in the background.

When you try to play music or podcasts with the screen off, the app crashes after playing audio for a while. Not just when the screen is off, the audio also randomly stops while playing in the background.

While some reports suggest this is happening after the latest iOS 15 upgrade, other older reports can confirm this isn’t a new issue. It was also present in iOS 14 and even got acknowledged back then.

When the screen is on, nothing breaks. When the screen is off, app crashes every single time. I’ve tried this on multiple playlists, via bluetooth speaker, via phone speaker. Crashes every. single. time.

I’m not sure what’s going on here but every time I lock my iPhone or leave the app, after a few minutes of playing music it stops, and the app crashes. One thing I do not want to do is delete the app because I have over 10,000 songs downloaded. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, it seems that this annoying bug is not over yet and in fact, it is still present even after the latest iOS 15.0.1 update came out a few days ago.

Not just that, Spotify has itself seeded a couple of app updates too but the issue still lives on.

Spotify hasn’t yet responded to this latest development and we hope the company brings a full-proof solution to this soon. Also, the cause of this Spotify background playback issue is unknown for now.

There’s also no temporary workaround available besides re-installing the app or clearing the cache. But if you are a premium user and have downloaded a bunch of songs already, then you might lose them.

All in all, you will have to wait until the officials acknowledge the bug. We will keep you posted as and when we receive anything informative on this Spotify background playback issue.

06:17 pm (IST): One individual took to Reddit to claim that they were provided with the following workaround by Spotify support:

1. Log out of Spotify

2. Restart your device

3. Sign in again.

So if you’re facing the issue, we’d suggest giving this a shot.

05:01 pm (IST): The latest status update from Spotify on the matter might be disappointing to those users who are facing the issue.

According to Spotify, they weren’t able to reproduce the issue and thus weren’t able to identify a specific cause.

So without being able to identify a specific cause, we’ll need to set this to NRN. We recommend excluding Spotify from any battery saving toggles as a first troubleshooting step. (Source)
