Virgin Media is one of the most well-known British telecommunication networks. It was founded in 2006 and is owned by Virgin Media O2, which in turn is owned by Telefonica and Liberty Global.

Last year, Virgin Media generated total revenue of 5.13 billion British pounds, with Cable being the largest contributor.

In March of 2020, it was revealed that the Virgin Media marketing database leaked sensitive user information such as phone numbers, email addresses, and home addresses of more than 900,000 people.

Having said that, it looks like many subscribers are having an issue with the service. According to reports, Virgin Media email users say they are constantly getting McAfee subscription spam emails.

Affected users say that the spam mail states their protection has expired and they need to renew their subscription.

Using filters to block out the word McAfee doesn’t seem to be working either. This is really annoying since users are getting multiple emails in a day. You can see in the image below how one of the spam mail looks like:

@virginmedia Hi, me and my mum both have virginmedia email addresses and for the last week we’ve both been receiving multiple Mcafee spam emails about no protection / viruses. We don’t use them. We keep deleting but both getting VERY frustrated. Blocking doesn’t seem to help?(Source)

@virginmedia I’m getting loads of spam emails about McAfee for the last few weeks. This has happened in the past too. Loads of them. No other spam. Do you want them back?

Upon further investigation, it looks like the McAfee spam email issue has been affecting several Virgin Media users for months now, with some reports dating back to November of 2020.

This may be happening because of the huge data leak that exposed the email addresses of Virgin Media customers last year.

It looks like Virgin Media has acknowledged the issue and shared an official workaround to fix the McAfee spam email issue.

The telecom giant is asking email users to reset their passwords and ignore those emails. However, there is no ETA on when the issue will be fixed.

We hope Virgin Media improves on their email filters and give users a real way to block spam messages. When the company fixes the issue, we will update this article so make you keep checking this space for updates.
