Gone are the days where Microsoft Office was a must-have software for every computer. Now, you just need to access the internet to use Google Docs. It is an online word processor and the best part? It is free.

Google Docs includes different document types, different templates, and many more features such as tracking changes, auto-saving, and working from anywhere.

One of the coolest features of Google Docs is the availability on different platforms. It is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Chrome OS.

That being said, there is an issue with Google Docs where users say the default templates mysteriously disappeared for them. If you’re familiar with Google Docs, you must know that templates are a vital part of the app.

You can make complex documents like resumes, brochures, or newsletters easily thanks to these templates. However, the new issue has made it impossible to use default templates for some Docs users.

The issue was first reported sometime late last month. And to date, more and more people are complaining about it. It is to be noted that the problem exists on multiple platforms.

Below are some of the complaints of users affected — be it from Workspace or Personal account types — posted on Google Support.

I’ve the same issue almost since 4-5 days. Tried multiple personal accounts in multiple browsers/devices. I can only see one template in “Education” category called “Report”. Even a previously used template “Project Proposal” cannot be seen anymore.

We have this problem with our education account. Google sheets, forms, quiz templates are all there. It’s just docs that are missing. My personal Google account has them there. We reported it to Google Via our Admin console and the guy could look at our screen and we went through a couple of settings. He said he could see the problem wasn’t on our side. he hasn’t messaged back with a solution as of yet.

As of this writing, the issue with Google Docs default templates having disappeared for some users hasn’t been solved yet nor is there a workaround.

On the positive side, a product expert has escalated the matter to Google for further investigation.

I’m hoping more users will report this problem in this thread so we can get a feel for how far reaching this issue has become. In the meantime, I’m going to escalate it to the team for investigation. I will report back as soon as I receive any updates.

Those affected can at least drop a comment at the active thread in question to speed up the bug-fixing process. For now, one can only wait and hope that this issue gets resolved quickly.

We will keep you updated as we come across more related developments.

Update 1 (September 11)

02:40 pm (IST): A Diamond Product Expert on the community forums has some unfortunate news for those facing this issue as they’ve claimed the following:

I don’t have any details on the progress of getting this issue resolved. I’m not a Google employee, so the information I receive is limited. The engineers can’t provide an estimated date for a fix as there could be multiple complications that are causing this and a fix may take some time. As I noted above, I’m staying on top of this and won’t let it slip through the cracks. As soon as I hear anything, I will let you know. (Source)

So it seems users may have to wait a bit longer for a resolution from Google.

Update 2 (September 16)

06:17 pm (IST): Multiple users have confirmed that the problem is now fixed as they claim that the templates are now back and working.

Issue resolved for me, all default templates back. (Source)

Yes. All templates are back for me too. Great job. (Source)

Just checked and mine are back – thanks for sorting Jo S! (Source)
