New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on July 02, 2020) follows:

Samsung is the leading smartphone vendor in the world not just because it pumps volumes of devices into the market annually, but because it also makes some awesome gadgets. These gadgets, as you’d expect, come at a premium price.

In a world where Samsung Galaxy smartphones can cost up to $2,000, one would expect that the device is near perfect, if not perfect. Be it the hardware or software aspect of it, no compromises!

Unfortunately, this isn’t true for many owners of various Samsung devices. Sure, Samsung has perfected its art when it comes to hardware, but things are still wanting when it comes to software – both user experience and regular updates.

Lately, the company has stepped up its efforts in terms of software updates. And while the experience on mobile phones was getting better, the latest developments seem to be taking Samsung two steps backward. In case you just came from a cave, well, ads are taking over Samsung devices.

Samsung-ads

We have documented cases of ads showing up in stock apps on Samsung smartphones and smart TVs here on PiunikaWeb, something Samsung has even denied. Still, this hasn’t stopped affected users of Samsung devices from signing a Change.org petition demanding the removal of ads in stock apps.

In just three weeks, the petition has garnered over 1,100 signatures and counting. The current target is 1,500, but we expect even more people to rally behind this noble course and force Samsung to revisit its ads policy.

It just doesn’t sit well parting with hundreds or thousands of dollars for a piece of hardware that ends up serving you unwanted ads to make more money out of you. So be sure to join in and sign the petition here.

Update 1 (August 17, 2021)

Seems like Samsung users will be delighted to know that there’s a possibility that the company might be planning to get rid of ads in its stock applications.

According to a recent report (in Korean), the President and Head of Mobile Communications Business for Samsung Electronics, TM Roh stated, during the company’s online town hall meeting, that ads will be removed from stock apps in future builds on Samsung Pay, Themes, Weather, and more.

Of course, we’re not saying that the Change.org petition forced the company to rethink serving ads in stock apps, but it’s possible that it played a small part. Whatever the case, it’s definitely good news for Samsung fans, and hopefully for all Android users.

Update 2 (October 02, 2021)

Samsung kept its promise and finally removed (in Korean) ads from the Samsung Pay app.

Thankfully, the advertisements from Health app are also gone and the users can now enjoy both these services without any interruption. For more info, head here.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
