New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on August 3, 2021) follows:

MIUI 12.5 is an extremely feature-rich skin and comes with just about every utility you can think of. Its stock apps like Notes and Calculator are so good that one simply forgets about the existence of their Google counterparts.

But along with those, you also get additional stuff like a built-in file sharing utility named ShareMe, a dedicated screen recorder, a remote control app, and even Xiaomi’s own Play Store. Although the lattermost is garbage.

A couple of more of these bundled utilities are the Mi Scanner and Compass apps. Mi Scanner helps users quickly scan QR codes to see associated info along with extracting text from documents, while Compass does exactly what its name implies.

Both of these apps have unfortunately stopped working across several devices [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] following the recently released MIUI 12.5 global stable updates.

Unable to open the link from QR code using Mi Camera after 12.5.1 update on Mi9. Still detects QR codes fine, but tapping the icon does nothing. Am I the only one, having such an issue? Any suggestions to fix it?

Please fix the qr code scanner app. After the #MIUI 12.5 update it stopped working on my 9T Pro. It was a really good app and I can’t get it back to work.

Users report that tapping on the apps’ shortcuts doesn’t really open up the apps. Instead, users are redirected to a Play Store link that appears to be broken.

Some even reported that both their Scanner and Compass apps greyed out too following which the Scanner shortcut in the Control Center stopped working too.

The QR code scanner within the MIUI Camera app hasn’t been either. Complainants have stated that it too doesn’t work, likely because it is bound to the Mi Scanner app.

Known devices whose QR Scanner and Compass apps are not working following the MIUI 12.5 update include the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi 9T Pro, and the Mi 9. Of course, more devices could be affected too.

Nonetheless, the annoying bug shouldn’t stick for long as Xiaomi has now acknowledged it with the latest edition of the MIUI Weekly Bug Report.

A fix should already be in the works for the MIUI 12.5 Mi Scanner and Compass apps not working issue, and when it rolls out, we will be updating our dedicated MIUI 12.5 bug tracker so stay tuned.

Update (September 28)

12:25 pm (IST): In the latest edition of MIUI weekly bug report, the company talks about this issue, noting that the fix has been merged into the stable version on September 15.

Issue: Camera can’t scan QR code.
Affected Device: Redmi 10
Affected Version: V12.5.3.0.RKUMIXM, V12.5.4.0.RKUMIXM, V12.5.5.0.RKUMIXM
Root Cause: In June, “Scan” and other pre-installed apps were migrated from the cust partition to the data partition, and changed from “non-uninstallable” to “uninstallable”. The camera needs to be compatible, which is not compatible with Redmi 10.
Status: The fix has been merged into the stable version on 9/15‌‌
