New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on July 21, 2021) follows:

Google Nest Wifi is Google’s take on mesh-capable wireless routers which aims to provide better internet connectivity across a home by setting up several Nest Wifi devices.

The Google Nest brand has been on a roll since its acquisition in 2014 where Google has been leveraging the resources available to them while baking in their own ideas for smart devices such as displays, speakers, and of course Nest Wifi.

A series of Nest Wifi devices at multiple ends of the house are no doubt lifesavers as no matter where you’re at your home, the peak signal strength of your WiFi is maintained providing a seamless internet browsing experience.

The best part is, Google Nest Wifi devices receive OTA updates from time to time to boost performance and make other improvements. But, as the tradition goes with updates, it may bring along uncertain issues causing devices not to perform well as intended.

With that said, the M89 update for Google Nest Wifi seems to be a lousy one where people are experiencing disconnections or keeps switching between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

Several worried users took to the Google Nest forums to address the frequent Google Nest Wifi keeps disconnecting errors, constant switching between frequencies, and Nest Wifi going offline.

Wi-Fi constantly swapping between two and five gigahertz after latest update distance has also been dramatically reduced. Seems to be swapping repeatedly then connection dropping all together I have friends with Nest Wi-Fi units and they are all experiencing the same issues today was really bad Wi-Fi is almost unusable.

Yup, my wifi keeps shutting off. I’ve Factory reset my system 3 times and switching the pucks for modem and still going offline.

This can pose to be a major issue since several activities like working and schooling from home are pretty normal these days. And with such problems with the home internet, it’s frustrating as it gets!

Also note that Google Nest and disconnection issues go a long way, as previously a similar issue started occurring on Google Nest Mini and still there’s no fix in sight.

Fix is in the works

After several reports on the same issue, an official at Google Nest has conveyed that they’ll be digging up the issue why Google Nest Wifi keeps disconnecting in case it’s a bug and will roll out a fix for the same.

Thank you for providing that and for coming back with an update. We’re working on this and hopefully, a fix is coming along real soon. I’ll continue to update the thread as new info becomes available.

This is a slight relief for Google Nest Wifi users since many even panicked and factory restored their devices thinking it was just an issue with their unit.

As soon as there’s any progress on the confirmed fix, we’ll be reporting that as well so make sure to check back on this story in case you’ve been the victim of the unstable Google Nest Wifi update.

Update 1 (December 02, 2021)

IST 11:23 am: Several months later and even after an update that was expected to fix this issue, the bug seems to continue afflicting users (1,2,3,4).

Luckily, there might be a workaround to try out according to one of the affected users.

I just unplugged my points for now. The internet works perfectly. Obviously the service area is smaller.

Update 2 (August 29, 2022)

12:15 pm (IST): It seems that the issue where Google Nest Wi-Fi keeps droping persists as fresh reports from users are still coming in.

Update 3 (January 24, 2023)

03:15 pm (IST): Fresh reports indicate that the ‘dropping connection’ issue is still present more than a year and a half later, and is affecting even more Google Wifi devices.

Update 4 (August 10, 2023)

12:23 pm (IST): Some users are still reporting this issue with Google Nest. And in the recent acknowledgement, Google said that they are aware of it and helping those affected via DM.

We hear you — while we’re aware of some online threads that bring attention to what’s happening with a lot of different user’s devices, most issues have troubleshooting steps that can be done to resolve them. We can continue over DM troubleshooting. (Source)
