Ever since Ian Flemming’s Casino Royale came out in 1953, everyone likes their martinis “Shaken, not stirred”.
While this may sound inappropriate when it comes to telephony, there is indeed a STIR/SHAKEN protocol. Its objective is to prevent caller ID spoofing which is one of major means of spam and scam calls.
Federal Communications Commission set a deadline for all major carriers to implement the STIR/SHAKEN protocol and file their compliance by June 30, 2021.
While most major carriers are already fully compliant with FCC’s anti-spoofing protocol, Google Voice subscribers have their own doubts about the same.
As per a recent thread on the Google Support community, a Google Voice subscriber pointed out that they are still getting robocalls even after the implementation of the STIR/SHAKEN protocol.
Also, the user raised their concerns as to when Google Voice will comply with the anti-spoofing norms (STIR/SHAKEN).
However, another user pointed out that the deadline set by FCC was to submit relevant information to Robocall Mitigation Database which most carriers, including Google Voice, did.
Moreover, the said protocol will come into effect on September 28, 2021 when carriers will have to prevent traffic from service providers which are not a part of Robocall Mitigation Database.
This is the reason Google Voice users are still receiving robocalls and even after the protocol comes into effect, there are numerous ways in which call spoofing can be done.
Thus the STIR/SHAKEN protocol is not a permanent fix for the caller ID spoofing problem but is just a preventive measure.
Nevertheless, regular users may still notice some difference when the said protocol comes into full effect in September.
All this basically means that even if your network service provider is STIR/SHAKEN compliant you may continue to get robocalls.
