YouTube is the most popular video streaming platform on earth and even the tiniest of glitches on the platform have the potential to affect billions.

And constant minor updates across all platforms, be it Android, iOS, TV, or desktop, ensure that there are plenty of those.

One of the most recent issues include a bug that causes the volume on YouTube desktop to reset to the max level or 100%. Facers of this have complained that this results in earsplitting audio that causes jumpscares.

Volume going to max when I try to set it lower? anyone else having this issue? from youtube

Anyone else having this issue. Usually keep volume at half, and it carries over to any new window or tab, until today. If I open a video in a new tab, the volume maxes out. Straight clicking on a video keeps the volume setting however. A small inconvenience, but an annoying one none the less.

I always listen to YouTube with the volume set to 50% because it always seems to be too loud, but I noticed recently that it stopped remembering the volume when I close the tab. Is there a setting that I have to check or something? Thanks for all the help 🙂

The volume reset happens with every new tab is opened on the browser or when the browser is restarted, regardless of what volume is set on the system.

The issue only seems to be limited to YouTube desktop as there haven’t been any reports from YouTube mobile app users.

As for the affected browsers, the bug doesn’t seem to discriminate between a Chromium-based browser or Firefox, as there have been complaints from everyone. Although, we haven’t come across any reports from Safari users.

A short inspection of posts on social media regarding the issue reveals that it began only recently – or since today, to be more precise.

While there doesn’t seem to be any workaround available that may be of help, YouTube just acknowledged the volume resetting issue on Twitter saying that they’re looking into it.

Thus, it is likely that the issue will be resolved soon and vanish as suddenly as it arrived.

That said, we will continue tracking the volume resetting issue for further developments and will be updating our dedicated YouTube bugs, issues, and pending improvements tracker accordingly, so stay tuned in the meantime.
