MIUI 12 isn’t exactly renowned for its performance especially on the lower end of the price spectrum. Complaints about laggy animations and stutters are commonplace from budget as well as mid-range devices.

In fact, the situation has gotten so poor lately that Xiaomi was forced to apologize for the slew of bugs and performance issues plaguing MIUI. After all, things had worsened with the onset of Android 11.

Much of the lagginess is noticeable doing simple stuff like returning to the home screen, opening apps, and heading over to the recent.

If you haven’t guessed already, such actions involve the use of the MIUI System Launcher app. From this, it is not unsafe to conclude that gestural lags can be largely attributed to the unoptimization of the launcher app alone.

So what has Xiaomi been doing to address these shortcomings?

Well aside from a promise to do better, the OEM has been making some major changes to the MIUI system – the MIUI 12.5 update has been claimed to reduce CPU usage by 22% and cut power consumption by 15%.

Additionally, it now seems that Xiaomi has also updated the MIUI System Launcher app to improve its fluency. MIUI System Launcher channel on Telegram has reported that the launcher’s latest alpha update is smoother than ever before.

Don’t believe it? Well, just check the video below for proof:

Yep, there isn’t the slightest hint of lag even with the screen recorder running. Of course, the video has likely been recorded from a flagship-level device, but one can still expect a degree of performance improvement on the budget end too.

Additionally, the update also brings some new app icon animations which are truly an eye candy.

Do keep in mind that you would need the Google Package Manager to install the update if you are on the global MIUI 12/12.5 ROM. To download the same for Android 10, head here. And for Android 11, head here.

Also keep in mind that the update is currently in the alpha stage. Hence you may encounter some unwarranted bugs here and there.
