MIUI 12.5 update 21.3.12 adds fancy Dolby Atmos sound customization to Redmi K40 series

The Redmi K40 and K40 Pro were first sold in early March amidst much excitement. The duo is part of the immensely popular flagship-killer K series that brings top-of-the-line specs at ridiculously low rates.

And the K40 series lives up to the name with the Pro variant sporting a flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset and a high-end 120Hz Super AMOLED display with HDR10+ support. Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg though as the devices have much more to offer.

One of their very defining features is that all of the models under the K40 series come with Dolby Atmos support. This promises a truly immersive audio experience and in the words of Xiaomi – ‘unparalleled detail, depth, and realism.’

Such audio enhancements are definitely going to make a difference by exploiting the K40 series’ dual speaker setup to its full potential. But it’s not just the speakers where Dolby Atmos shines as the tech also supports headphones.

There is a catch to it all though – Dolby Atmos has simply not been implemented yet. Although Xiaomi did leave a footnote on their website promising support for it with a future OTA update. They even gave out an ETA – end of April.

Nonetheless, as many of you may already be aware, Xiaomi recently kickstarted the MIUI 12.5 beta development for the K40 series. The devices are also set to be one of the first to bag stable MIUI 12.5.

Such updates are released every 2-3 days on average and the latest one has actually delivered the promised Dolby Atmos support. Keep in mind though, that you will have to be a part of the MIUI 12.5 Chinese beta program to avail it.

This new feature adds a new switch to toggle between Dolby Atmos on/off modes on Redmi K40 series and several presets to customize the audio as per taste. There is also an equalizer option in case you want to tweak things further.

That said, Dolby Atmos audio customization tools are currently limited to the Redmi K40 series since they’re seemingly the only MIUI 12.5-eligible devices with advertised support.

But we still hope that Xiaomi treats other existing devices to the feature as well with future updates.

For now, be sure to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12.5 update tracker so that you don’t miss out on any new developments.
