New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on November 26, 2020) follows:

Xiaomi has lots of devices. Lots of them. Some even closely related and merely differentiated by slight variations in name tags.

Case in point is the Redmi 9. There are multiple variants of this device sold in various regions across the globe. It even changes its name at some point to the Redmi 9 Prime.

The global Redmi 9, codenamed lancelot, is sold in India as the Redmi 9 Prime and runs MIUI 11 out of the box. In India, there’s another Redmi 9 device codenamed cattail and has MIUI 12 pre-installed.

Redmi 9 (lancelot) aka Redmi 9 Prime

Whatever reason Xiaomi had for these choices is only known to them. Either way, the Redmi 9 Prime should soon be upgraded to the new MIUI 12 update, at least that’s how we see it.

Typically, the same Xiaomi devices sold in multiple regions get updated to new software in intervals of days or weeks.

With the global Redmi 9 MIUI 12 update now rolling out, it suggests the Redmi 9 Prime should bag this same update pretty soon as well.

Changelog:

[Control center]
– New: Tapping a blank spot in Control center closes it now
– Optimization: Control center layout in landscape mode
[System]
– Updated Android Security Patch to November 2020. Increased system security.
[Camera]
– New: Watermarks
– New: Full screen mode

The update may arrive in India in the coming days or weeks for that matter. As for those using the global Redmi 9, the OTA is live, but this may take a few days to arrive on your unit.

You can either wait for the download notification or grab the firmware via the link below and install the MIUI 12 update manually. The update is based on the outgoing Android 10 OS.

Since devices in the Redmi series, like the Redmi Note family unless Xiaomi has other ideas, receive one major Android OS update, Redmi 9 aka Redmi 9 Prime users can expect an update to Android 11.

We don’t have an official release date, but we can bet the rollout should happen sometime in 2021. We will be here to let you know about it, but you can also keep an eye on our Xiaomi Android 11 update tracker.

The Redmi 9 Prime is also eligible for the update to MIUI 13. And like the update to Android 11, this edition of MIUI will also go live somewhere in 2021, but it should arrive earlier than this year. Hopefully.

Again, you can keep an eye on all developments around MIUI 13 here, including new features, eligible devices and release dates. Stay tuned to PiunikaWeb.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
