Unofficial Xiaomi software update policy hints at MIUI & Android OS versions device owners can expect

Unofficial Xiaomi software update policy hints at MIUI & Android OS versions device owners can expect

Xiaomi has a rather interesting way of dealing with software upgrades. The company has managed to effectively decouple its custom Android skin, MIUI, from the underlying Android version.

This means that the underlying Android version doesn’t matter so much as the MIUI skin overlay.

      MIUI-12-1

This, therefore, means that users of Xiaomi devices get more excited over MIUI upgrades than they do about new versions of Android.

Unfortunately, though, Xiaomi, like many other Android phone makers, does not have a publicly available software update policy for its devices.

Sure, we’ve come to expect at least two Android version updates for many flagship devices although some like OnePlus and Samsung are moving to support their devices with up to 3 new Android versions.

Xiaomi has generally stuck to 2 Android updates for its flagships but for the mid-range offers in its catalog, this has seemed inconsistent as some would get one new Android version update.

Well, today, thanks to an unofficial Xiaomi update policy by a user on a Xiaomi-focused group on Telegram, we begin to see a method to this madness that is Xiaomi’s update scheme.

In the detailed breakdown, the user goes to show how Xiaomi tends to update and support its devices through MIUI and Android version updates. Below is the breakdown.

      Mi Series

      -2 Android Upgrades
      -4 MIUI Upgrades

      Mi Max/Mix/Note/T Series

      -2 Android Upgrades
      -4 MIUI Upgrades

      Redmi Series

      -1 Android Upgrades
      -2 MIUI Upgrades

      Poco F & X Series

      -4 MIUI Upgrades

      Poco M Series

      mi mix note update policy
      Poco F X C series update policy

Redmi K Note series update policy
      T Max A update policy

This ‘educated’ breakdown shows a picture of how Xiaomi is currently supporting its devices. From it, we can deduce which devices are eligible for MIUI 13, MIUI 14, Android 11, Android 12 and so on.

It is impressive to see Xiaomi doing up to 4 new versions of MIUI for a number of its devices. Bearing in mind that Xiaomi users get stoked over new MIUI builds than Android updates, Xiaomi is really onto something.

Of course, this is an unofficial update policy so you might want to take it all with a grain of salt.
