This story is being continuously updated…. New updates are being added at the bottom…..

Original story (from July 13) follows:

One good thing about Android One devices is that they get regular security updates on a monthly basis for three years. While Android One devices are also supposed to get timely updates, timely has become relative among various device vendors.

But for the most part, device owners are just fine as long as the updates arrive within the month, just like it is already happening with Xiaomi Mi A3, the latest from the company’s popular Mi A series.

The device is already receiving the latest July 2020 security patch. The update, according to those who have received it, weighs in at a massive 1.4GB and bumps the software version to 11.0.3.0.QFQMXTC (not QFQMIXM).

On top of bumping the security patch level to the latest July 2020, the update also tags along a bunch of unwanted bugs. For starters, multiple users say the update has pre-installed a couple of apps/services that are not even related to the Indian market – Mi Telcel & Claro Musica apps.

Even more interesting is that after the update, the Mi A3 reportedly displays a Telcel logo on the boot animation. Just so you know, Telcel is a Mexican company that has nothing to do with Xiaomi or Android One for that matter. What’s even worse is that you cannot uninstall these apps.

Xiaomi Mi A3 received a new update size 1.40 gb after update I’m seeing 3 new apps installed in my phone 1st claro musica 2nd Mi tecel 3rd tecel and its Chinese app doesn’t uninstall so disable the all three apps due to data access.

@MiIndiaSupport I have update my MI A3 with recent system update.
1. Why there is Telcel Apps installed by default? It’s not even a relevant telecom company for India.
2. What is MMIGroup, which has by default access to all the app permissions

Furthermore, some Mi A3 owners have reported issues with the second SIM card after the July update, something that Xiaomi has quickly acknowledged via an official post made in the Mi forum.

There was a serious bug in the latest update, if you are on this build, you have only one working SIM (it does not recognise the other one whatsoever). We will try to see if there is a fix, BUT… once again… DO NOT UPDATE (if you have not already)!

According to Xiaomi, the company is looking into the SIM card issue after the Mi A3 July update with the aim of providing a bug-fixing update soon. As for when exactly, no one knows. For those who had already grabbed this update, you may have to live with the bugs until a fix arrives.

We will keep an eye on the developments and let you know when the bug-fixing update begins rolling out. But once again, do not download and install the latest July update on your Mi A3 handset.

Thanks for the tip Sreyance Modi, Rajat Nagi, and Dakshit Shah!

Update 1 (July 13)

Xiaomi PR has reached out to us with the following statement:

We are aware of the software update issue on a few Mi A3 devices. On further investigation, we have identified it to be a technical issue due to which a software update not meant for Indian users, was shared inadvertently. This issue has been fixed already from our side and our technical teams are working on a recovery solution that will be rolled out soon.

Update 2 (July 15)

Here’s the latest status update on the matter coming from a community moderator:

UPDATE: July 14, 2020
Okay, just saw a message, they said they would push a fix tonight (GMT + 8) so…. keep your chin up people.

Update 3 (July 15)

The bugfix update is now live as we’re getting reports from users saying the problem has been sorted. Xiaomi has also published the official release notes for this update, which is arriving as V11.0.17.0 QFQMIXM.

Great news, the latest Global Stable ROM V11.0.17.0 QFQMIXM has been released (you should receive it in the next few days via an OTA update)!
Note: If you are on global 11.0.16 or telcel 11.0.3, you get the new build (11.0.17)!

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
