The other reason Xiaomi smartphones remain popular among Android users is the ease of unlocking the bootloader to flash custom ROMs. The major reason, of course, is their affordability compared to other offerings in the market.

For years, Xiaomi smartphones have been fan favorites when it comes to custom ROM development and modding. The company continues to support third-party developers with each device released, not forgetting the few in the Android One-based Mi A series.

For owners of the Mi A2 and Mi A3, things are about to get exciting. Fresh from getting updated with support for native call recording via the June update, owners of the duo can now try the many features that come baked in the company’s in-house MIUI 12 skin.

Of course, this has nothing to do with Android One software running on the Mi A2 and Mi A3. Instead, the previously mentioned ease of installing custom ROMs is what comes to play here, allowing users of these devices to flash an MIUI 12-based ROM.

Thanks to folks behind the popular Xiaomi.eu custom ROM, the Mi A2 and Mi A3 can now be installed with a working version of the latest MIUI 12 skin based on Android 10 OS.

The Mi A3 MIUI 12 ROM is based on the Mi CC9e (MIUI 12 beta 20.6.18) while the Mi A2 MIUI 12 ROM is based on the Redmi Note 7 (MIUI 12 beta 20.6.18). The download links can be found at the bottom of this article, but be warned that these are unofficial builds so they may include bugs and errors.

Some of the known issues include fingerprint not detecting while the screen is off. This can be fixed temporarily by using AOD. The 10-sec option should come in handy for lower battery usage. Also, no need to install Super Wallpaper because it will crash AOD (Super Wallpaper feature isn’t supported on the Mi CC9e).

As promised, those interested can find the download links alongside the installation guide for the Mi A3 here and for the Mi A2 here.

Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
