OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are among a handful of non-Google devices released in 2017 that have Android 10 running the show today courtesy of a software upgrade. The other one is the Essential Phone.

With Essential essentially out of the smartphone business, OnePlus remains the only non-Google smartphone vendor whose devices are guaranteed up to three major Android OS updates. The latest beneficiaries of this policy are the OnePlus 5 and 5T, with Android 10 their third OS upgrade.

Although extended software support is what many Android device owners crave for, this doesn’t always spell good news for aging devices. With three years under the belt, the standard OnePlus 5, for instance, is not a new device by any means, especially for those who have owned it since day 1.

Couple the aging hardware with the high/new demands that come with the latest Android OS iteration and you may end up with a device running the latest software available but delivers a not-so-good day-to-day experience all thanks to bugs and errors.

Apparently, the update to Android 10 for some OnePlus 5 and 5T owners may have had this effect since rolling out a while ago. Some device owners say the quality of call recording has deteriorated since updating their units to Android 10.

I am using one plus 5. I got an update for my phone which is for Android 10. I installed it 3-4 days back. Till today i.e. 06 June 2020 everything was working fine. But from today afternoon the Phone’s call recording feature is not working as it was working before. The recorded sound is very different and it feels like it is very slow and shimmering.

Ever since last update call recording is slowed down for calls. For 1 minute of call recording is for 2-2½ mins (slow speed recording). My guess is from normal 1x recording it went to 0.25-0.5x speed automatically… I’ve updated my phone on 4 June and all recording after that has been problematic all recording before that are fine…

A quick look at the reports reveals that the poor quality call recording issue has been here for several weeks now, but OnePlus has yet to come out and acknowledge it. But even before that, the company has another related bug that also needs urgent attention.

Apparently, other OnePlus 5 and 5T users say the update to Android 10 has completely removed the call recording feature from their dialer. This is quite strange but not the first time such a thing is happening to some device owners.

Since these are issues that didn’t exist prior to the update to Android 10, OnePlus 5 and 5T owners will be looking forward to the release of a software update to address the call recording bugs. As for when this will be released, we’ll first have to wait for OnePlus to acknowledge them.

Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
