Google’s current flagship device, the Google Pixel 4 is any tech enthusiast’s dream. This device packs the very latest software from Google, a class-leading camera and much much more.

Sadly, it is not all rosy for Google Pixel 4 users. Over the past couple of months, we have seen reports that the Pixel 4 users have been experiencing some rather weird bugs with their units.

According to reports, a section of Pixel 4 users have been facing issues to do with random reboots of their devices and another rather strange bug where the battery level remains stuck at 50%. We have more on this here.

Many months later, we continue to get reports of the same issue from distressed Pixel 4 owners on various forums online. All these reports point out the exact same battery issue.

As it turns out, the issue might have nothing to do with Pixel’s software at all. According to a moderator on Google’s forum, users might need to get their devices checked at a dealership. Some time back, while addressing the problem in question, a product expert at the forums mentioned:

“Anyone experiencing either the 50% battery issue or the random shutdown issue should contact Pixel Support as your device might require warranty repair or replacement. There’s no guarantee that this is a software issue and the more people contact Pixel support regarding this issue the better grasp Google will have of the situation. Unless Google has explicitly announced that a fix is coming via update, there’s probably not much point in waiting to see if an update fixes the issue.”

This might be a Pixel hardware issue after all. As such, affected users might want to take advantage of this and take their devices in for warranty repair or replacement.

Update 1 (March, 2021)

12:50 pm (IST): It seems that the battery issue is indeed hardware related since a Platinum Product Expert has recommended a suggestion from an Australian blog that has pointed out the issue to be linked to a faulty Battery FPC connector. This requires the device to be sent in for repairing.

Google did mention that it has extended its repair program for the Pixel 4 XL in certain countries for certain “power-related issues”. Therefore you might be lucky enough (in this case) to have the issue fixed for free.

The battery FPC connector is apparently located around or directly beneath the Google logo on the back of the device.

This probably explains why some individuals (1, 2, 3, 4) managed to temporarily fix the problem by squeezing or applying a bit of pressure on the Google logo.

Update 2 (August 19, 2022)

12:29 pm (IST): Many Pixel 4 owners are now reporting (1, 2, 3, 4) that the device is randomly shutting down after it reaches 40 or 45% battery.

Users report that this issue has been there since Android 13 beta and still hasn’t been fixed in the stable version. Unfortunately, Google hasn’t yet acknowledged it.
