Nvidia Shield TV 4K playback issue on Amazon Prime fixed in the latest update
In markets where one can easily get hold of the Nvidia Shield, be it the original model from 2015, its immediate successors in 2017, or even either of the latest 2019 models, it’s easy to overlook other streaming devices like Apple TV 4K.
Powered by Google’s Android TV and the gaming company’s tried and tested hardware, the Shield TVs play nicely with just about everything that is media streaming. To spice things up, you also get gaming capabilities to go with, among other stuff.
But beginning March 2020, owners of the various Nvidia Shield TV units all the way from 2015 to the latest models have been unable to enjoy one of the best features of the media streaming boxes – the ability to stream/play 4K content from Amazon Prime, Netflix, and other platforms.
While Netflix and other streaming services are still able to deliver up to 4K content, for some reason, Amazon Prime content is capped at 1080p.
This issue started showing up towards mid last month following a new software update to the Amazon Prime app on the Shield TV. Granted, this has little to do with the latter and more related to the former.
As of this writing, Amazon is rolling out a new software update to address the Shield TV 4K playback issue on its app. This has been confirmed by Nvidia support, adding that the update is currently available on 1% of Shield TV units.
The rollout of the update is staged and is expected to have hit all units by Monday next week. It is only after the Amazon Prime app is updated on all units that the Shield TV 4K playback issue will be fully fixed.
As it stands, Shield TV owners will be able to play 4K content on Amazon Prime from early next week, but again, be sure you update the app to the latest version available for this to work.
