Out of the box, the Redmi Note 8 Pro came without support for Widevine L1. This meant no HD streaming on both Netflix and Amazon Prime for owners of the device. However, the company promised to fix this issue with the Redmi Note 8 Pro Android 10 update.

It took quite some time before the OS started hitting the device. When it finally arrived in late February, users reported that the update indeed addressed Netflix HD streaming issues as promised.

With Widevine L1 enabled after the update to Android 10, Redmi Note 8 Pro owners were finally able to play HD videos on Netflix and Amazon Prime. But for some reason, this same update also removed HDR support on both platforms, at least according to multiple reports.

Apparently, HDR streaming is working fine on YouTube, but it isn’t supported on Netflix and Amazon Prime. While all fingers point to the streaming services, Xiaomi could be at fault here.

As it stands, only the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K20, and Redmi K20 Pro have been whitelisted by Netflix for HDR streaming support, suggesting the Redmi Note 8 Pro doesn’t meet the needed conditions to be whitelisted by Netflix for HDR streaming.

The story should be the same with respect to HDR support on Amazon Prime, so we hope that a future MIUI update will address this matter once and for all.

Thanks for the tip, Naveen.
