Original story (published on March 19) follows:

A couple of weeks ago, Xiaomi pushed the stable Mi 9 Lite Android 10 update to users in China following weeks of testing the beta firmware in the country.

Like several other Xiaomi devices, the Mi 9 Lite has a different name in China. Here, it goes by the name Mi CC9, but the underlying software is nearly identical bar the China-exclusive stuff.

When the Mi CC9 picked up the stable Android 10 update, it meant that the Mi 9 Lite Android 10 update for the rest of the globe wasn’t too far away. And indeed, as of this writing, the software is now up for grabs for select owners of the Global and Russian variants of the Mi 9 Lite.

In Russia, the update is arriving as MIUI 11.0.1.0.QFCRUXM while those using the Global variant should see an OTA download notification with MIUI version 11.0.1.0.QFCMIXM. In both cases, the new OS is accompanied by an updated February 2020 security patch.

– Stable MIUI based on Android 10
– Updated Android Security Patch to February 2020. Increased system security.

In the official announcement post, Xiaomi is quick to warn Mi 9 Lite owners that this isn’t the full rollout of the OS. Rather, it’s a limited release for a few units, with the wider rollout expected once the company is confident that there are no bugs in this initial firmware.

This phase could last a week or two and depending on the outcome, the wider rollout may or may not proceed. But why wait when we have the download links needed to install the new OS manually on your device? If interested, check them out below.

As for folks on the European (EU) ROM of the Mi 9 Lite, the wait is still on. This variant recently picked up January 2020 security patches, but users say the update is causing issues with the Netflix app.

Whether this slight delay in receiving the update to Android 10 has anything to do with Xiaomi addressing this issue is still unknown, but we will keep an eye on the developments and update this story when the update for this region is out.

Update 1 (March 21)

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem.
