OPPO subsidiary Realme announced the Realme X50 5G smartphone on January 7, 2020. Despite the many leaks that had been doing rounds ahead of this launch, the X50 5G still managed to surprise keen followers.

The phone borrows a leaf from the Galaxy S10+ by packing a dual punch hole on the screen for obvious reasons – to house a dual-lens selfie camera with a 16MP standard lens and an 8MP ultra-wide lens.

The screen itself, though, is an LCD panel measuring 6.57 inches (1080p) with Gorilla Glass 5 protection, but the best part is that it has a 120Hz refresh rate, just what you need to see on any modern-day smartphone.

Running the show on the inside is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G SoC, which, as the name suggests, has an integrated 5G modem. In terms of memory, you can pick from either 6GB, 8GB or a massive 12GB of RAM and storage options of 128GB or 256GB.

Software-wise, Android 10 comes preinstalled, but this time, there is the new Realme UI skin on top of AOSP. Stories of Realme UI have been here for months, only that they were doing rounds as Realme OS.

Matter of fact, Realme is already recruiting Realme X2 owners into the Realme UI beta program that also promises to bring Android 10 to the device. Others that are currently eligible for the program are Realme X and Realme X2 Pro.

In February and March 2020, Realme UI will be available for owners of the Realme X Lite (aka Realme 3 Pro) and Realme Q (aka Realme 5 Pro), respectively. It’s likely to roll out in beta first before stepping up to the stable channel.

Meanwhile, the Realme X50 5G is already receiving its first software update in China as version A.05. The update brings optimizations to the camera, calling experience and general system performance.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
