Big-name Android smartphone vendors are always trying different things to stay unique. No, it’s not about the folding and sliding designs, but the software that runs the show from the inside.

Each vendor has their own take on Android and usually, this includes adding a bunch of exclusive features to make their devices stand out.

Huawei, for instance, has things like GPU Turbo and (Honor) Link Turbo. The former is a graphics processing acceleration technology meant to enhance gaming performance on Huawei/Honor smartphones while the latter is meant to bring faster download speeds to Honor phones.

Leveraging AI and big data technologies, Link Turbo automatically analyze users’ usage models and network conditions to figure out the best way to deliver an optimal result, and switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi or 4G networks to boost downloading speed by simultaneously adopting both networks.

Essentially, what Link Turbo does is to improve network connectivity by intelligently switching between 4G and Wi-Fi networks or where necessary combining both to boost downloading speeds.

The best part of Link Turbo, if you ask me, is the ability to let users allocate different networks to select apps in what Huawei calls Intelligent Shunting.

Here, what happens is that you can, for instance, assign the use of 4G network to banking and messaging apps and Wi-Fi network to torrent and gaming apps.

Even better is that Link Turbo also lets users use both networks for resource-intensive tasks/apps like video streaming platforms and online gaming. As noted earlier, this tech made its debut with the Honor View 20, but Honor promised to bring the tech to other models via software updates.

Link Turbo will debut on the HONOR View20 and be available later for other HONOR devices via an update.

Apparently, the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro are set to receive the Link Turbo feature after they pick up their EMUI 10 updates. At the moment, the two are currently testing the feature internally.

Internal testing in progress, HONOR 9X series will be upgraded to Link Turbo after the EMUI 10 upgrade. Cellular data and Wi-Fi dual-network intelligent switching.

Honor 9X Link Turbo feature coming soon

Huawei welcomed the Honor 9X and 9X Pro into its ongoing EMUI 10 beta program earlier this month, so we can expect the stable version to arrive somewhere in Q1 2020. This is when we can begin thinking of the Honor 9X Link Turbo update.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
