A couple of weeks ago, Huawei opened sales for its newest products in China, among them the Huawei MatePad Pro tablets, both Wi-Fi only and LTE models.

The MatePad Pro is the first of its kind. Prior to its launch, all Huawei tablets had the MediaPad moniker. Besides the new name, the slate also became the first in the world with a hole in the display screen to house the selfie camera.

Furthermore, the MatePad Pro is the first tablet to support 5G and also becomes Huawei’s first tablet with a stylus dubbed M-Pen. According to the Chinese company, the M-Pen supports a sensitivity of up to 4096 pressure levels, same as the Galaxy Note 10’s S-Pen.

Huawei MatePad Pro has a huge 10.8-inch display panel with a QHD resolution, runs on a Kirin 990 chipset allied to 6/8GB RAM and 128/256GB of internal storage, and has a solid 7250mAh battery that supports 40W fast wired charging and 15W wireless charging.

You also get to share power with other devices thanks to the supported 7.5W reverse wireless charging. In terms of software, there is EMUI 10 based on Android 10 out of the box.

To further improve the software experience, Huawei recently started recruiting owners of the MatePad Pro into an open beta program in China that will be used to test early versions of EMUI updates before being pushed to the public.

The program accommodates only 2,000 MatePad Pro units and is open to register until January 2, 2020 at noon. You’ll need any of models MRX-W09 or MRX-AL09 installed with EMUI 10.0.1.112 in order to get into the open beta program.

For those who will be successfully enrolled into the Huawei MatePad Pro open beta program, the company will want you to submit feedback about any problems encountered here.

Elsewhere, the MatePad Pro is receiving a new EMUI 10 update that is arriving over the air. The firmware version is 10.0.1.121, up from the base version 10.0.1.112 required to join the open beta program.

The changelog is in Chinese and while the translation is a bit off, it does mention the addition of smart split-screen function, improvements to the multi-screen function as well as the stylus writing experience, among others.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
