Take the example of Huawei or OnePlus – both of these OEMs opt for a easy versioning scheme for their custom skins (EMUI and OxygenOS respectively) that aligns with the numbering pattern of Android itself. On the other hand, MIUI from Xiaomi is none but a complex mess in this domain.

Redmi K20 MIUI 11 update prompt: The underlying Android layer is still based on Pie

Allow me to clarify the situation: although Xiaomi does update the upper level skin, the Android version beneath is not necessarily tied up with it. Matter of fact, Mi 8 and Mi MIX 2S recently received stable MIUI 11 OTA, but their Android 10 update went live via beta channel merely hours ago.

Xiaomi is known for backporting various features from higher version of Android. As a result, end users can easily find functionalities like system-wide dark mode in the latest build of MIUI, irrespective of the bottom layer. The 11th generation of the custom skin is currently rolling out for a number of Mi branded phones.

Mi Max 3 owners in China are receiving stable MIUI 11 update
