Asus ZenFone 6 (Asus 6z) Android 10 Project Mainline support gets confirmed

Google is always trying to bring out new features to the Android-powered devices. However, bringing out new features requires a lot of planning and development behind closed doors.

As you may know, a new and fresh look has been brought in with the latest Android 10 OS. At the same time, a lot has been done for the speedy delivery of security and firmware updates to Android devices, as updates in the Android-ecosystem are equally important as the development of the new OS.

To enhance and provide more speedy updates to all the Android devices, Google brought in the Project Mainline. It is based on Project Treble and helps is simplifying and speeding the delivery of updates for the Android-ecosystem.

And the latest device to get Project Mainline support is the Asus Zenfone 6 (aka Asus 6z). Moreover, the device will have 2-years of security updates. Now, let us understand the Project Mainline in detail and how it will be beneficial for OEMs like Asus.

Project Mainline allows for updating the core OS components. In simpler words, just like Google pushes app updates, in the same way with the help of Project Mainline, the firmware can be updated via the Play Store.

Moreover, the Project Mainline gets rid of the long waiting time that Android device users of different OEM were entitled to. The reason being, different OEMs took up the latest update’s source code and build different versions compatible with their smartphones.

This resulted in variation in the time taken to deliver the updates. To save the hassle, Project Mainline will help in speedy delivery of security fixes, privacy enhancements and other optimization updates for the Android-ecosystem through the Play Store.

The whole process works in a way that the mainline components will be delivered as either APK or APEX (which is a new file format developed by Google). This ensures the important security & other improvements that needed to be part of the previous OS can be downloaded easily, just like updating an app from Play Store.

Updating only the required component will not only reduce the update size but also will help in rolling out faster updates for the devices in the Android-ecosystem.

And now, Asus Zenfone 6 (Asus 6z) will now be supporting the Project Mainline. However, Asus will still remain responsible for major patches and other software updates as they need to tweak the update for the respective devices.

Talking about the Android 10 update, the beta for the Asus Zenfone 6 (Asus 6Z) is already being tested and the stable version is expected to roll out soon. We will keep you in the loop once we have more information regarding it.
