Xiaomi fans are not new to the sheer number of devices the company keeps pumping into the smartphone market, some of which are hard to differentiate from their immediate predecessors.

A recent example is the Redmi K20 Pro. The device has so far received a second variant following the launch of the Mi 9T Pro in Europe with the same design, specs, and features. Dubbed Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition, the new model was unveiled last month and is still limited to the Chinese market.

What sets the Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition apart from the standard Redmi K20 Pro is the superior Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset that runs the show under the hood alongside more RAM of up to 12GB and double the storage on the standard model, going all the way to 512GB.

Apart from these, the two phones are identical, be it the design, features, camera, battery capacity, and so on. However, as usual with Xiaomi devices, their codenames are different as well, with the K20 Pro going by the name “raphael” while the Premium Edition is codenamed “raphaels”.

Now, as I write this, you can already grab the first MIUI update for the Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition as V10.4.1.0.PFKCNXM. As you may have guessed, this ROM is for the Chinese market, which is no surprise since the device has yet to go global.

The new MIUI 10.4.1 update for the K20 Pro Premium Edition bundles August security patches, which is rather disappointing considering a flurry of Xiaomi devices have already been upgraded to the newer September security patch.

The ROM is not available on Xiaomi download servers yet, but we already have the link to download the update so you don’t have to wait for ages to get the software.

The changelog is still elusive at the moment, but since this is the first update, it’s possibly an optimization firmware and nothing much. Matter of fact, this should be the basic explanation as to why the update contains an older security patch.

Apparently, the new ROM can be cross-flashed, meaning you can have it installed on your standard K20 Pro, but as always, do this at your own risk. Granted, any kind of K20 Pro development will also be applicable to the Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition, which is pretty cool.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
