PSA: We do understand the recent Huawei ban episode must have raised firmware update-related concerns for you as a Huawei/Honor phone user. While the final picture is still unclear, at least for another 3 months, Google will be working with Huawei. That means, the scheduled updates in the coming 90 days (starting May 20th) should be releasing as planned. But what after that, well, that depends on Huawei’s fate in the US.

This story is being continuously updated….new updates are being added at the bottom…..

After every major Android OS release from Google, when are devices from other OEMs going to get the new OS is one of the hot discussion topics. And soon after the models to receive the update are confirmed by phone manufacturers, begins the race for which device will get the update first.

The same stands true for 2018 Android OS Android Pie (9.0), which since its arrival on Google’s own Pixel phones has landed on numerous non-Google brands.

But as usually is the case, testing the update compatibility on devices is a time taking process. Therefore, not all listed or update-compatible smartphones devices are lucky enough to get hands on the OS immediately. In fact, for some, the wait period turns out to be really long.

Take for example the Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei and their sub-brand Honor. While Huawei phones like P10, and Honor devices such as 8X and 8 Pro were bumped to Android Pie last month, many of their phones still await EMUI 9.0 update based on Android Pie.

But we have good news cum status update for users owning three of the Honor devices namely Honor 9 Lite, Honor 9N and Honor 7X.

Honor 9 Lite

Honor 9 Lite (also known as Huawei Honor 9 Youth Edition), the device that launched in 2017 shipped with HiSilicon Kirin 659 chipset, Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Huawei’s customized skin EMUI 8.0 is going to receive the much awaited Android 9.0 update in a couple of months.

The information came straight from the horse’s mouth. While reverting back to one of the user queries on social media platform Twitter, @HiHonorIndia confirmed that all the compatibility tests have been completed and the update should be pushed to Honor 9 Lite by the mid of June.

Here’s what thy said:

We expect to release the final version of Android Pie in batches tentatively by mid of Jun’19 for Honor 9 Lite

Honor 9N

Moving on, second device that will be receiving EMUI 9.0 based on Android Pie 9.0 update soon is Honor 9N (also called 9i in China). Honor 9N is another mid-range device launched last year powered by HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC. Just like Honor 9 Lite, 9N was also released with Oreo and EMUI 8.

What’s now coming to light is that along with Honor 9 Lite, 9N will also get Pie in June. Here’s how the official Honor India Twitter account informed a couple of users about it. They said:

Our software team has confirmed the compatibility of device with Android Pie and expected to be released the final version of Android Pie in batches tentatively by mid of Jun’19.

FYI the China variants of 9 Lite and 9N, that is, Huawei Honor 9 Youth Edition and Honor 9i started receiving Android 9.0 update a few days back.

Honor 7X

Honor 7X originally came boxed with Android Nougat, EMUI 5.1 and was bumped to Android Oreo 8.1 last year. And curious device owners have been inquiring when is 7X going to get Pie.

Honor India is giving conflicting statements regarding the matter. While they informed one of the users that device compatibility has been confirmed, to another user the said it’s still under evaluation.

Following are both their responses:

So currently, there is lack of clarity regarding whether the compatibility test process has been completed for Honor 7X or not.

That’s not all.

Honor India also informed a Honor 7A user that Android 9.0 won’t be available for them due to device’s hardware compatibility issues.

That’s all regarding Honor’s update schedule plan. Hoping they release the updates on time as promised.

Going by Honor India’s latest statement on the matter, Android Pie update for both Honor 9N and Honor 9 Lite are now expected to arrive this month end instead of June.
