[Stable Pie rolling out] Second beta of OnePlus 3/3T Pie (Android 9) update up for grabs

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

The public beta testing of the Android 9.0 Pie update for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is ongoing without any major hiccup. The Shenzhen based OEM is testing two separate builds: HydrogenOS 9.0 for Chinese models and OxygenOS 9.0 for the global OnePlus 3/3T variants.

The Chinese users got the taste of the public beta builds much earlier than the international user base. While the first Hydrogen OS community build was available on April 4, global users needed to wait till April 17 to grab the initial Oxygen OS beta build.

The changelog of the first OxygenOS 9.0 community beta for OnePlus 3/3T is as follows:

      System

      – Updated system to Android™ 9 Pie™
      – Brand new UI for Android Pie
      – Updated Android security patch to 2019.4

      Do Not Disturb mode

      – New Do Not Disturb mode with adjustable settings

      New Gaming mode 3.0

      – Added text notification mode
      – Added notification for 3rd party calls

      Phone

      – Deep integration with Google Duo

      Camera

      – Integrated Google Lens mode

The China team quickly pushed another beta build, which patched a handful of major bugs present in the first build. After getting feedback from the users, they fixed glitches related to capacitive buttons, Bluetooth audio and various UI issues.

Now OnePlus global team has announced the second community beta build of OxygenOS 9.0 for the OnePlus 3/3T. Similar to the Chinese builds, users have to download the full update package and flash manually – there is no OTA update prompt.

The changelog of this update is pretty much compact:

      Bug fixes

      – Clock timer and stopwatch interface display is incomplete

      – Microphone doesn’t work when earphones are plugged in

      – Crash issues with native message app

Although shipped in May, there is no update to the security patch level of this build. OnePlus engineers opted to stick with April 2019 security patch.

The download links are as follows:

      • OxygenOS 9.0 Community Beta 2 for OnePlus 3T: Download (MD5: e156f650712e22a730ecedfc283e3351)

Both of the update zips were compiled just a day ago, i.e. on May 6. Interestingly, the data wipe issue on unlocked bootloader is still present in this build.

XDA recognized developer dianlujitao, who is the official maintainer of LineageOS for OnePlus 3/3T as well, thoroughly analyzed the situation:

If your data is encrypted and bootloader is unlocked, after upgrading to Pie modem firmware, there’s 100% chance of your data to become corrupted, and probably no way to restore them. The cause is on firmware side, probably something wrong with key migration, so there’s no way for 3rd party developers to fix it.

Fortunately, the final release should fix the annoying glitch. dianlujitao is in touch with the OnePlus engineers, and has recently got the affirmative news.

Hopefully OnePlus is working hard to get rid of this annoying issue in the subsequent builds. Those with a locked bootloader can install these builds via Local update or sideloading via recovery. Further details can be found on the official announcement thread.

      Update (May 22)

After a series of beta testing rounds, OnePlus is finally rolling out the stable Android 9 Pie update for Oneplus 3T and 3 in the form of OxygenOS 9.0.2.
