T-Mobile letting OnePlus 6T users carrier unlock their device right away
OnePlus’ first carrier collaboration in the US came with T-Mobile this year, when the company announced that its OnePlus 6T smartphone will be available to purchase directly from the magenta carrier.
However, as it’s usually the case with carrier collaborations, there are some limitations with the T-Mobile OnePlus 6T variant, including no dual SIM capability and no carrier (and hence bootloader) unlocking until you fully pay off the device and have used it for over 40 days.
Here’s what a user got to hear from the company on Twitter:
However, what we’re now hearing is something different, something that’ll likely bring a smile on faces of many T-Mobile OnePlus 6T users. Here it is: the carrier is allowing OnePlus 6T booloader to be unlocked right away. Yes, you don’t have to wait for the usual 40 days time line at least.
Multiple T-Mobile OnePlus 6T users have reported they could easily carrier unlock their units shortly after purchasing them. All they did was to reach out to T-Mobile with their request, and the carrier’s customer care reps happily obliged in most cases.
I called Customer service and told them I bought the phone cash from T-Mobile store and it doesn’t make sense to put me on a 40 day hold to unlock, I own the phone outright. I asked was there any way to override the 40 day policy because I travel and sure enough she bypassed the policy
Same I just sent a pic of my receipt on Twitter and the guy told me about the 40 day policy but tried anyway and it worked
Yeah it doesn’t even make to put us on a 40 day hold if we own the phone
Contacted Tmo via Twitter and they did it no problems!
I just had tmobile support via twitter help get my 6T unlocked in not even 15 minutes
I went to TMobile help on Twitter and asked them to unlock my device so I can unlock the bootloader. They overwrote the requirement….
Going by reports however, not all T-Mobile reps are honoring this request, so gotta keep trying until you get in touch with someone who is willing. Anyway, here’s how users explain they performed the unlock process:
[She] told me I will have to do a factory reset. I factory reset and open the unlock app and tap the permanent unlock option and boom it unlocked and the app disappeared
They overwrote the requirement and then I used to unlock app to permanently unlock my device. I restarted and now I can toggle oem unlocking in developer options
This is definitely good news for many T-Mobile OnePlus 6T users. Here’s hoping the carrier minimizes the time delay for software updates as well, given that OnePlus 6T purchased directly from OnePlus has already received an update, while T-Mobile models are still on the launch software.
