[Coming soon] iPhone XR doesn’t support Quick Reply for lock screen message notifications
Update (November 09):
This feature will be made available in iOS 12.1.1. More info here.
Original story follows:
Are you planning to purchase the recently launched Apple iPhone XR? Are you used to the ‘quick replies’ functionality on your existing device(s)? Well, if your answer to both these questions is yes, you need to read on.
We are seeing a lot of complaints from iPhone XR users that they can’t quickly reply to messages from lockscreen. Agreed, it’s known that the iPhone XR doesn’t feature 3D Touch, but users have explicitly confirmed that even their existing devices that don’t feature 3D Touch allow quick replies from lock screen notifications.
Here’s a collection of some complaints:
Although I’m fully aware the new XR doesn’t have 3D Touch, all my other non 3D Touch devices like the iPad Pro 10.5 v2 for example, allow me to press and hold any notification from the lock screen to quickly interact with it from the lock screen rather than tap on the notification to fully open the associated app. When I press and hold the notification on the XR lock screen nothing happens
Checked out the XR in store today and really like it, but am wondering if anyone can comment on if you can long press to access options like quick reply, delete emails quickly, etc on the lock screen. Based on commentary, this appears to not be an option but is confusing because I can long press on my iPad and get the 3D Touch options on notifications. Would probably be a deal breaker for me since I use this about 20 times a day
Does anyone happen to know if you can quick reply to a message from lock screen with the iPhone XR? I’m have a real problem figuring this out. Is it the lack of force touch? Or did apple seriously not add this option. Super annoying someone please help.

Hi @erfon, love you and the Cultcast!
My Quick Replies messages from the lock screen on my iPhone XR isn’t working. Is it working for you?

Hi @reneritchie, thank you for all the wonderful tech shows and info you give to us!!
I’m having issues doing Quick Replies with my iPhone XR using messages from the lock screen. I might be doing the gesture incorrectly. Does it work with your iPhone XR? Thank you! -Scott

@tldtoday @MKBHD @austinnotduncan iPhone XR does not allow quick reply from lockscreen even though it was shown to have that feature. Seems like a bug on Haptic Touch because iPads can already do this. Need your help to get this fixed by @AppleSupport

Even ZDNet’s Jason effectively confirmed this in their iPhone XR review:
The iPhone XR doesn’t have 3D Touch. Instead, it uses Haptic Touch…….Haptic Touch is only used in three places on the iPhone XR: Activate the camera and flashlight shortcuts on the lock screen, in Control Center, and on the space bar to move the cursor in a text field
Multiple users reached out to Apple Support over the missing Quick Reply feature. While in some cases the support staff was caught off guard, in at-least one of the cases, it was finally confirmed by Apple engineers that this is an expected behavior.
I heard back from the apple technical adviser yesterday. He said he talked with engineering and they confirmed that the lack of long press interaction on lock screen notifications is “normal behavior” and not a bug on the iPhone XR. He told me he tested it on his iPad and did confirm that it works on his iPad and wasn’t sure why the feature is not included on XR. He suggested I fill out a feedback form online to request that feature on the XR and said he filled one out himself. He said the more requests they get for it, the more likely it will get included in a future update
If you’ve already purchased the iPhone XR and this news came as a nasty surprise to you, it’s worth sharing that there’s a workaround that you can use: swipe a notification left and the select view. However, this is just a band-aid, especially for those who use the Quick Reply feature a lot.
This method just adds another click to achieve something that can be achieved on all other devices 3D Touch enabled or not, just by pressing any holding, and when you use this action a hundred times a day, extra taps just become slow and cumbersome
If you have been missing this feature, we suggest you provide a feedback regarding this directly to the company. If enough users approach them with this request, there are chances of the feature being implemented in future. And rest assured, we’ll let you know as and when any news-worthy development takes place on the matter.
