OnePlus talks about OnePlus 6T and what features OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 5T/5 will get
As scheduled, the OnePlus 6T finally went on sale yesterday (November 1). And on the launch day itself, the Chinese company revealed some useful details about the device. We have collected key takeaways from the AMA session that was conducted yesterday. So without further ado, here’s what all you need to know.
To begin with, let’s talk about what all is coming to the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 5/5T. The company has confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will get all tweaks and new features on the OnePlus 6T camera (like Nightscape). In fact, this has already started happening. Of course, software features like Gesture Control 2.0 will also be made available.
However, as for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, they’ll only get software improvements. Here’s what a OnePlus employee said about this:
Camera features are dependent on hardware and might not be available on older models, but software improvements such as Gestures 2.0 and smart boost will be available on all 5 and 5T
No, Nightscape will only work on OnePlus 6/6T due to hardware difference
Moving on, OnePlus 6 lost a key feature soon after it was launched. Yes, we are talking about always on display. Sadly, the OnePlus 6T doesn’t feature it as well. When asked about it, OnePlus didn’t offer a very encouraging response.
Always on Display is a great feature to have on a smartphone. However, we are still considering the functional value vs power consumption of this feature before we implement it
As for missing notification LED (which is one of the many OnePlus 6T disappointments we highlighted here), the company said it was done to maximize the amount of screen real estate while minimizing bezels from all sides.
Moving on, replying to a query on screen unlock animation causing eye strain in dark or night, OnePlus said this is something they are working on.
OnePlus revealed a few details about screen protectors as well, including a suggestion to use official OnePlus 6T screen protectors for better unlocking experience. Here’s the list:
We suggest using official OnePlus screen protectors as we have optimized them for Screen Unlock
Our standard screen protector in the box is made of PET, but the screen protector selling on website is made of 3D glass
We will sell the 3D Tempered Glass Screen Protector in the near future
Moving on, the company confirmed that T-Mobile OnePlus 6T variants aren’t eligible to participate in the OnePlus Beta Program. And the Bullet Wireless accessory will get a new feature.
We are bringing an EQ feature to Bullets Wireless through a software update. The EQ will be compatible with all OnePlus phones that run Android 9
Finally, there were several other tidbits like no plans for launching a smart band, smartwatch, or compact OnePlus smartphone models, use of OnePlus Fast Charge accessories a must to reach 3A, no WiFi calling support on AT&T, and OnePlus 6T GPS chip is from Qualcomm. Oh, and yes, you can use the OnePlus 6T in display fingerprint scanner to verify with apps as well.
