Siri Shortcuts on iOS 12.1 throw “problem with the app” error, users say
Apple’s latest iOS 12.1 release may have brought along multiple new features and improvements, but as with any new iOS update, there are some issues as well. In fact, we have a continuously updated article that lists all the issues/problems/bugs that users have reported so far.
And now, a new problem has come to light which we think is worth highlighting separately. We’re a seeing a significant number of reports that activating Siri Shortcuts through voice or speech isn’t working – users get “Sorry, there was a problem with the app” error. Following are some complaints from Reddit:
Every time I try to activate the shortcut via Siri, it says “Running your shortcut” and pulls it up, but then says “Sorry, there was a problem with the app.” It’s extremely frustrating because it’s basically useless to use the shortcut if I can’t use it with Siri. The shortcut works fine if I tap on it inside the Shortcuts app. Has anyone else dealt with or found a fix for this?
Constantly being told by Siri that the re “is a problem with the app” and asking to open shortcuts for previously working Shortcuts that use write to Health App (Shortcut works fine manually)
So basically, running Siri shortcuts through speech is broken. Manual shortcut triggers are working as intended. Following are some more reports:
Chiming in to report I’m seeing the exact same behavior. Shortcut with a speech recognition action fails when triggered via Siri, works fine running directly from shortcuts app. Running app v2.1.

I am using iPhone 6S with iOS 12.1. When I tell Siri to run a shortcut Siri comes back and states there is a problem with the app. With this particular shortcut I am using the get input action is the first action.

Did anyone at Apple even test Shortcuts? What’s the point of having Siri trigger a shortcut if you have to go into the Shortcuts app for the workflow to run? #useless

@AppleSupport After updating to iOS 12.1 I can no longer initiate a shortcut by speaking to SIRI. Error says "Sorry, There is a problem with the app"

For some users, this Siri Shortcuts problem appears in specific use cases. For example, see this complaint:
Similar problem here. Siri activation is broken on 50% of my shortcuts. I created some test shortcuts with only one or two commands and it seems that some specific commands like “dictate text”, “ask for input”, “vibrate” (and maybe more) are causing this issue. If the shortcut starts with a dictate text command, it can’t be activated by Siri. If I put the dictate command in a choose from menu it suddenly works again. If the shortcut contains ask for input or vibrate, Siri activation doesn’t work at all. I also tested the “write to health app” command and it worked with Siri
It’s worth mentioning that we’re also seeing reports this issue was present on iOS 12 as well, but it wasn’t very widely reported. Looks like the iOS 12.1 update has made it more frequent.
Anyway, given that it’s been just a couple of days since iOS 12.1 started rolling out, it’s difficult to say if the problem is very widespread. What’s, however, sure is that the issue is causing a lot of inconvenience to users. Let’s hope Apple fixes it sooner than later.
