Google Assistant not making calls or sending text messages? You aren’t alone
For the past week or so, users of Google Assistant are reporting issues with making calls or sending text messages. While other commands work fine, users say when they ask Assistant to make a call or send a message, it fails to do that.
One of the following errors are thrown up instead: “This internet connection isn’t stable right now”, “This internet connection isn’t reliable at the moment”, and “Can’t reach Google at the moment.”
Here are some complaints:
Can’t reach google at the moment – won’t make phone calls but AI works for everything else
Every other command works fine (eg. “Open Spotify”, “Google search for…” Or “navigate to…”) just not for making calls or messages. I’ve tried looking through assistant settings etc, changing my default SMS app, restarting my phone. It happens on wifi and when I have full 4G signal
Given the severity of the problem, there are active discussions on it over at the official Google Assistant forum (1,2). A bug related to it was also opened at the Google Issue Tracker website, but a Google employee closed that thread saying:
Thank you for reporting this matter. The component of this issue is designed to address issues with the Google Cloud Platform Speech API.
For issues regarding Google Assistant, the platform to reach the responsible team is the Google Assistant Help page. Seeing that you already reported the issue on that forum, the next step is awaiting a response from them. Nevertheless, on another post on the Google Assistant Forum, a user has reported that they got in touch with the Google team responsible for that matter. I would suggest to keep an eye on that thread for future updates
Even those using Android Auto are also complaining about these errors, but as clearly evident, the problem is related to Google Assistant.
If you take a closer look at all the forum threads we’ve linked in this story, you’ll agree this Google Assistant problem is very widespread. The company will have to act quickly and fix the issue soon. Rest assured, we’ll let you know as and when that happens. Until then, you can try out the following user-shared workarounds:
try these different syntax: https://assistant.google.com/services/a/uid/0000000d62875c0a?hl=en-US
“Call John Smith” does not work.
“Call John Smith’s mobile” does work for me
“OK google, call dad” still doesn’t work….. BUT….i stuffed around a bit and found out as people have said you can say…. “ok google make a call” then she’ll ask who, “dad” kinda works but “dads mobile” works best.
Now after a bit more stuffing around… Specifying “OK google, call dads mobile” seems to work every time.
I’m also getting it to work with messages. “message dad” is useless, but “message dads mobile” works
