Pixel 3 users report speaker buzzing/crackling sound during calls
Google’s new Pixel 3 series phones have already received bad press for speaker issues like audio imbalance and buzzing/distorted sound produced even at low volumes. Initial reports suggested these problems could easily be seen with notifications sounds, songs, and videos.
The media didn’t talk about calling experience though. So we took it upon ourselves to find this out. And we were surprised to see a significant number of users reporting that the buzzing or crackling sounds – which some describe as “faint electrical static noises” – are quite prominent during calls as well.
Here are some reports:
Bought my Pixel 3 XL 128gb from Verizon. I noticed after a few calls there’s a faint cracking sound coming from the top speaker. More noticeable during calls I listened to it off calls and still hear it screen on or off not sure what it is
I’m getting a high frequency ticking sound on calls from the phone earpiece. Every call. When I tried my bluetooth earpiece, and then the Pixel buds, the audio over those devices is clear, but if I put the phone to the ear I hear the ticking only.
During a voice call on cellular or wifi calling doesn’t matter which I am on I hear this odd noise that can overpower the conversation at times. Best way to explain it that it sounds like an electrical current in the background and it comes and goes
I made a call today and noticed an odd sound, like a very small rattling or vibration in the earpiece. I put the phone on speaker and the sound did not come out of the speakerphone speakers. I made a call to a different number after and heard the same issue
Anyone else hear a buzzing sound coming from their top speaker when making calls? It’s not loud enough to prevent me hearing the other person talk but it is noticeable enough for me to actively be aware of it during the entire call.
@Google have you started rolling out pixel 3 xls that don't have the speaker buzz? I'm contacting Verizon today. Phone calls are unbearable.

While some of those affected say the rattling noise or sound they hear is quite prominent, others say it does not create a major distraction but is definitely an annoyance. Going by reports we scanned, Google has issued RMAs for majority of those who contacted the company over this matter.
It’s worth mentioning that early adopters of the Pixel 2 also reported annoying sounds (although of a different kind) with their device. The problem was officially acknowledged by Google and a fix was rolled out to fix it.
Here’s hoping this is also a software problem and would get fixed through a software update soon. Meanwhile, drop a comment below to share with us your Pixel 3 calling experience.
PS: There are other serious problems plaguing the Pixel 3 as well. More info on them here.
