Replacement dongles fail to fix Pixel 2 headphone adapter issue
Shortly after the Google Pixel 2 launched last year, users started reporting a major issue, saying the bundled USB-C to 3.5mm dongle wasn’t working as intended. Complainants said despite the adapter being connected to the device, the music or audio played through the phone speakers.
Google acknowledged the glitch in January this year, saying if a reboot fixes the problem temporarily, then a future software update will fix it. Else, complainants will have to get their headphone adapters replaced.
It’s October now – close to eight months have passed by – and if you look at this Google forum thread here, you’ll see complaints never stopped. Here’s one from this week:
It has always been a problem with the phone, I am convinced now that it is hardware based & won’t be fixed, I’ve had 3 devices, I have had 5 dongles from Google, I have tried HTC’s own dongle, The problem still persists, I suspect it is hardware based due to it working fine for a couple of weeks & then these symptoms occurring & completely at random
Here’s another one from a few months back:
I’ve gone down the path (and wasted time) of getting two replacement phones, two dongles and nothing is different. Google Store support is still recommending to replace the phone a 3rd time
Even those who have recently purchased a Pixel 2 are also reporting the same problem. Here’s a report from this month:
Just bought a pixel 2 and the standard adapter/dongle that came with it doesn’t work with my headphones. No issues with headphones as it works fine in my laptop and other devices. Really frustrated that there is no response, at least an acknowledgement, from google regarding this
On Google’s Issue Tracker website, there are two threads related to this problem (1,2). On the second one, a Google employee said last month the problem has been passed on to the development team. No further update has been offered until now.
Here’s the crux we could extract out by going through what all complainants have been saying:
- Replacements failed to work in most cases
- Many users confirmed their dongle works perfectly with their other devices like PC
- Even newly purchased Pixel 2 exhibits the same behavior with included headphone dongle/adapter
Here’s hoping Google gets to the root of the issue, and fixes it sooner than later. Meanwhile, do let us know your experience with Pixel 2 headphone adapter in the comments section below.
