Need option to hide/remove Apple News sidebar in iOS 12, users say
Among the many new features that the iOS 12 update brought along, there was an Apple News related change in the form of a new sidebar on the left (see featured image above).
Here’s how Apple explained it:
The new sidebar on iPad and Channels tab on iPhone make it easy to jump straight to your favorite publications and discover new ones
The intention behind this change looks good on paper, but in reality, users aren’t liking it. And what’s particularly annoying is that there’s currently no option to disable or hide or remove this sidebar in the landscape mode.
Just to give you an idea on how much this change is bothering News app users, there’s a thread on the official Apple forum where this change is being discussed. That thread – which is just over a month old – contains 4 pages full of complaints and the ‘I have this question too’ button (that you usually see in the beginning of every thread on Apple forum) currently shows 795, which means close to 800 people on this thread alone are asking how to hide the sidebar.
Well, the @AppleNews app really sucks in IOS 12. I’ve lost 25% of the screen in landscape mode to a sidebar that can’t be moved. Any other news apps worth a look?

I really have no idea why this always-on sidebar in IOS 12 Apple News is a good idea. It's distracting and it eats up about 25% of my screen. Might be time to kick the habit of using that app…

Hey @Apple could we get an option to remove the News app’s side bar while in landscape orientation on iPad like we can in portrait mode? I don’t use the sidebar so I’ve essentially just lost some space with iOS 12 pic.twitter.com/HT4W6savv9

It’s worth mentioning that the sidebar goes away in the portrait mode, but there’s no way to make it disappear in the landscape mode. Complainants say they don’t see much value in the new sidebar. Plus it takes a lot of screen space (or display area). And not to mention the inconvenience caused to those who use their left had to scroll.
Some of those who reached out to Apple support were told this is by design, and not a bug. So it makes sense the problem persists on iOS 12.0.1.
However, inability to hide/remove/disable it is driving users nuts. As an affected user, the only way you have currently is to provide a direct feedback to Apple about this matter, something which iPad users can do by heading to https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.

It doesn't appear that there's a way to hide the sidebar. If you'd like to send us feedback, we'd be happy to hear from you: https://t.co/eTPVYVFyd8

Do submit your feedback on this new always-on sidebar. If there is a significant number of users that offer their feedback on this, there’s a possibility of Apple adding the requested option in the next update.
