Update (October 10): Following is a user shared video that shows the Galaxy Note 9 camera completely failing at launch.

Update (September 21): These camera problems have been confirmed. A Samsung forum moderator confirmed today that the company is working on a fix.

The response will honestly depend on how fast our teams can find a fix. If it’s more difficult to fix than what they initially think, I don’t have any ETA at all. The fastest I have seen a case like this get fixed is about a week. I hope this information helps, I’m sorry I can’t really offer more

Update (September 11): We’re seeing more reports about this problem. Take a look here.

Original story follows:

As if multiple speaker-related issues weren’t enough, it has now come to light that users of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note9 smartphone are facing some serious camera problems as well.

There are a significant number of reports that say the flagship device’s camera either lags or freezes, spoiling the whole user experience.

There are even reports of camera failures.

Following are some complaints we collected from around the Internet:

I’ve noticed that on my note 9, that the camera freezes while taking pictures. It’s worse while shooting videos with a lot of lagging

I’m also having the same issue. Constantly freezes and unresponsive for at least a good 5-10 seconds at a time. Frustrating

I have been having issues with the camera freezing/lagging on my note 9. It happens often, for example I open to take a photo and on the screen it freezes and I have to wait sometimes force close to get it to work, it happens while recording video too

My husband has been having the same issue. We tried clearing the camera cache and rebooting and it stopped for a while, but resurfaced. 512gb us T-Mobile blue. No sd card installed

I have also got a replacement phone and it does it on that too. Sometimes it just freezes without taking a photo just on the screen as the viewfinder. Also, the camera freezes within apps most notably for me in WhatsApp and the front flash goes off but the picture is still dark. So far this phone is definitely sub par out the gate

I have the same issue with Camera lag or freezing. It doesn’t always happen, but it happens enough to be annoying. I am on Verizon with 128gb. So not sure what’s the problem here.. Is this a Camera issue? Since not a lot of people are reporting the issue it seems

Here’s a tweet (containing a hilarious animated GIF) that sums up what affected users are going through:

For its part, Samsung is apparently aware of these reports (1,2,3).

Reason being Cole from Samsung Electronics’ North American offices has reached out to affected users on XDA, asking them for more information for further discussion.

While we aren’t sure how widespread the problem is, it’s good that Samsung has already started contacting affected users.

Let’s hope the South Korean company nips the problem in the bud by releasing a software update soon.
