Google (re)introduces ‘Mentions’ feature for YouTube comments
Good news for creators and other YouTube users who have been requesting YouTube through their feedback channel to incorporate the ability to tag or mention a specific person while replying or commenting on a video.
Incoming is a new YouTube feature dubbed ‘Mentions’ which, as the name suggests, allows you to refer to a particular individual while replying to comments posted on a video or while posting a new comment on a video.
One of the Google employees took to YouTube help forum to break the news to users, sharing that the feedback about comments and tagging submitted by many users is what led them to introduce this feature.
Here’s their exact statement:
We’ve received a lot of feedback about comments and tagging from both creators and users. Today we are excited to introduce Mentions! Now when you reply, you are able to mention a specific user in your reply.
While they were light on how the feature works, they did say:
The username will auto-populate when you reply to a reply and the notification will go directly to that user.
For now, the feature is available only on YouTube’s Web client and Android app, and that too for select audience.
This feature is currently available for some Android & web users.
Is this feature really new?
Depending upon how long you’ve been using YouTube, the feature might not be new, as something similar existed earlier as well (can be seen in the following video). But was removed (though we aren’t sure when) for some unknown reason.
Anyway, are you getting to see the feature on your Android device or desktop? If so do share with us your experience in the comments section below.
