AVG is Sony’s official mobile security partner for Xperia devices, and going by the Japanese company’s recent confirmation, the antivirus app’s May update has introduced serious troubles on Xperia E5 phones- battery drains and device overheating.

Someone from Sony Xperia Support took to the company’s official help forum to break the news, where multiple Xperia E5 users were complaining that their device’s battery nose dives to zero percent after it hits 50% or below.

The support staff told the complainants that AVG app’s recent update is to blamed for the mess, and that the company has asked AVG to fix the glitch with a new update.

You may experience that the battery drains quickly or becomes unusually hot on your Xperia E5. This is known behaviour caused by the AVG Protection/Antivirus app version 6.10.9 (released May 22nd 2018). We have asked AVG to release a new version to fix this issue as soon as possible.

Furthermore, they also suggested those affected to disable AVG protection unless they come up with a fix. Here’s the complete statement:

Well that may bring some relief to the troubled Xperia E5 users. We hope the promised fix also gets live soon. Rest assured, we’ll update as and when that occurs. So keep a tab here.

Just in case it helps, here’s a quick sneak peak of how users have been explaining the issue.

Over the past couple of days I my phone has been dying frequently. I have noticed that when my phone is in use, the battery has started to drop rather rapidly and the once it gets to around 30% the battery level immediately drops to zero and powers off (it literally did it while I was looking at it). It doesn’t let me power it back on until it’s charged enough.

Same problem losing power rapidly and taking ages to charge also battery is very hot on charging only since last week

I have the same issue for about the last week. Phone suddenly drains, especially from in the 50 percent range, drops down rapidly, only lasting for less than a day on full charge Today went from 19% to switching itself off within 2 minutes. Takes hours to charge and feels very hot. Has taken 4 hours to get to 80%. It is just around a year old so can’t believe it needs to be replaced yet?

My Sony E5 battery just drains When I go online it gets so hot the screen has visible burn marks on the screen.

I’m still having issues. Even with the pho in safe mode I still have quick battery drain, slow charging, and dying. Also what I forgot to mention earlier is how hot the battery is getting. The phone is up to date (marshmallow 6.0) and when looking at the battery usage it says the highest usage is android system at about 58% even when I have things like WiFi and screen rotate off.
