YouTube confirms video freezing/loading issue on iOS (5 seconds bug)
For almost a week now, YouTube’s iOS app users have been complaining (1,2,3,4) about a weird issue restricting videos from loading past first 4-5 seconds, specifically when on WiFi. A YouTube for iOS update – which was pushed out last week (on March 26), bumping the version to 13.11 – could be the culprit, as users started reporting the problem after that only.
Anyway, what’s good is that Google’s already on the issue. Google employee Marissa (who is also the Community Manager at YouTube Help Forum) acknowledged the issue over the weekend saying:
We are aware and looking into this!
A quick look at the following user comments and recent tweets will give you more clarity on the problem in question:
For the past two days, YouTube videos have not loaded past five seconds when I use wifi. This includes ads – if there is an ad that takes five seconds to skip, the video itself won’t load at all. The thing is, I can watch videos if I’m not using wifi, and all of our other devices work when using our wifi.
Can’t watch videos. They won’t load past 5 seconds no matter what I do. Been happening since a few days ago. Been happening for my brother and me, and I’ve tried deleting the app, switching WiFi, resetting my phone, etc. Everything I can do on my end basically. Even had an internet technician come out, and there’s no issue with my WiFi.
Videos over WiFi will freeze after few seconds 4~5 on iPhone and ipad. Audio stream will continue if I switch out of the app and run in background. Switching back to the app stops it again, while video is still stuck at the first paused frame. Linksys is the router and did restart and reset network settings, reinstalled the app. Nothing worked.
I think this might be connected to the YouTube app updating. My app updated three days ago – the same time that this started happening. I guess we just have to wait until the next update.

Hey @YouTube every video I watch stops at five seconds. On iOS and it works fine on the computer. Even the ads don't load past five seconds

@TeamYouTube YouTube on iPhone won’t load any video passed 5 seconds. It’s not a WiFi issue. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled among other things with no fix. Please help a kid out

@TeamYouTube For the past few days YouTube on my Macs, and iOS has not been working. The vast majority of videos will only load 5 seconds. It’s not my connection. Here is a reddit post with the same issues. https://t.co/62ckzll9bX

If you take a look at the Version History section of the app’s iTunes listing, you’ll see it again got updated today, bumping the version to 13.12, bringing in general fixes and stability improvements.
But nothing much has been clearly stated about the video loading problem discussed in this article. Moreover, neither Marissa has offered any update on the forum thread, nor users have stopped complaining about the problem. So it is reasonable to say the fix hasn’t arrived yet. Here is hoping that happens sooner than later.
