Update (February 06):

Google has officially confirmed that the client’s latest version 3.39 has added support for network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Here’s how you sync photo/videos to Google Drive and Google Photos from NAS devices using Backup and Sync:

To start syncing, mount the network device to your Mac or PC. In the “My Computer” section of the Backup and Sync Preferences, click Choose Folder. Select the mounted folder or subfolder, and click Open. Click OK. Network folders sync periodically only while mounted on your computer

Along with that, now it’s possible to exclude Apple Photos Library metadata from syncing.

In the “My Computer” section of the Backup and Sync Preferences, click Change. Select Back up photos and videos, and uncheck Back up Apple Photos Library metadata. When unchecked, only photo files from your library are backed up. When checked, your entire Apple Photos Library is synced to Google Drive

Original story:

Another step by Google intended to improve the application Backup and Sync, which the common client for both Google Drive and Google Photos. The application has received an update, bumping its version from 3.38 to 3.39. The new version carries fixes for two major problems: files being locked by the client (which prevents edits by other applications from being saved), and sync failures/crashes in multiple scenarios.

Lets take a detailed look at the matters that v3.39 addresses.

Firstly, the file locking issue we recently uncovered – wherein the client prevented applications from saving files (as it locked them), costing users their edits/changes in the process – has been taken care of.

The confirmation about this came from the same Google employee on different threads discussing the problem in question over at the official help forum. Here’s what they said:

Please try the latest version (3.39). It should address this issue

Coming to the second matter, users were complaining about use-cases where Backup and Sync crashed and threw notifications like ‘Sorry, Google Backup and Sync needs to quit. Error: D41D8CD9‘, ‘Something went wrong, Backup and Sync needs to quit. Error: D41D8CD9‘ or ‘Sorry, backup and sync needs to quit. Error: F15FB759‘.

Rishi updated on different threads discussing the problem, saying that the client’s latest version has some memory improvements, that in turn may reduce these type of crashes.

Please try the latest version (3.39). There are some memory fixes with it that may help alleviate these issues.

Some of these errors, if you remember, popped up while syncing network mounted folders as well. Since Rishi’s comment is generic, we aren’t sure whether or not the network folders sync problem has been resolved.

In case, you have been facing the problems discussed here, you are suggested to upgrade to Backup and Sync v3.39, and check if the issues have been resolved. And, don’t forget to let us know in the comments section below about your experience in general with the client’s newest version.
