Google Duo adaptive icons issue officially acknowledged [Update:fixed]

Adaptive icons is a concept that brings flexibility to the way app icons are displayed – the formatting depends on the device or launcher the user is using. Adaptive icons are also used in shortcuts, the Settings app, sharing dialogs, and the overview screen.

Now, coming to the issue in question, recently a number of users on Twitter started sharing that Google Duo is not supporting adaptive icons in launcher shortcuts.

For comparison, it was brought to notice that Duo’s sibling Allo does support adaptive icons.

Allo displays a square icon for app, along with square shortcut icons. But it’s not the same in case of Duo, as the app icon is in square, but shortcut icons are in circular shape.

The user observation soon got acknowledged by the product’s technical lead- Justin Uberti, who said the problem will be taken care of. Specifically, he said:

Sadly, an exact timeline of the arrival of the fix wasn’t shared. But as always, whenever the solution will arrive, we’ll be the first ones to share the news, so keep watching this space.
