That’s the way a cookie crumbles, is the thought that strikes my mind when I go through the variety of issues that the buyers of Samsung’s latest flagships report on daily basis across the internet. And the sigh gets deeper when an all together different problem comes to light, making the device even less worth its cost.

Coming to what new has caught our sight this time, is apparently an issue specific to Galaxy S9+ devices, wherein users complain (1,2,3,4,5) that the notification sounds coming from their device are not loud enough. Rather, they are barely audible, despite of being set to maximum volume level.

Those affected note that the volume of notifications somehow get softer in real time as compared to when checked/set in settings. A quick go through the following selection of user comments will make you realize what users are going through.

The sounds sound fine while selecting them in the respective app settings but as soon as the notification is triggered it’s like the speakers are covered with cotton wool or something. But in answer to your question yes, all sliders are at their maximum.

There is an issue. My notifications on my S9+ are very quiet and I noticed that it only happens for notifications. I have my notification volume all the way up. Ringtones are loud, music on apps is also loud but the notification sounds only come from the bottom speaker only.

The main default alert as well as individual app notifications all seem way too quiet, I can hardly hear them.

We were able to locate similar reports on Twitter (1,2,3,) as well.

Some of the complainants note that the low volume issue is due to the notification sound coming only from the bottom speaker of the phone. Also, while majority users are complaining about notifications, some face the same low-sound issue in case of ringtones as well.

A couple of users who tested the notification sounds downloaded from third-party apps like Zedge also confirmed the same behaviour.

Yep it’s low. Something is wrong (software problem).
I downloaded a few notifications from zedge and there loud but as soon as you use it as a notification it’s very low.
Even Samsung own notification sounds are low.

It’s also worth mentioning that the problem seems to be software specific as explained by a senior XDA member on a thread discussing the same issue.

Sadly, even replacement devices failed to bring any relief to some of those who tried, as the sound glitch continued to show up on the replaced S9+ units as well.

Samsung is reportedly knows about the problem. Back in March, one of the affected users had shared that the company’s aware of the issue.

Yes Samsung needs to fix this. I can barely hear my notifications. This is so dumb. I went to Best Buy and the Samsung rep said they are aware of the issue.

But disappointingly, there has been no official word from Samsung all this while. It’s a widespread issue, so the company should fix it on priority, or at-least offer a clarification so that users are aware about Samsung’s take on the matter. Let’s hope the matter gets resolved soon.
